Tell us a little bit about your background

I’m from the Netherlands and I have an academic background in Anthropology, Economics and Media. I started Blackburd while I was studying my degree and working a part time job in retail. My business was a spontaneous decision that grew through carrying out industry research.

What sparked your idea to start Blackburd?

In 2017 I realised that I no longer wanted to continue on my planned career path, which used to be working for a magazine. It wasn’t just my personal love for fashion that inspired me, but also my desire to dictate my own lifestyle through entrepreneurship. The inspiration to start Blackburd came through brainstorming solutions in the fashion industry. Ultimately I wanted to create a brand that looked and felt exclusive but catered to everyone.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned since you started Blackburd?

Diversify your skillset so that you can do many things yourself. For anything you can’t do, hire freelancers!

What services do you come to PeoplePerHour for?

I’ve used PeoplePerHour many times to hire freelancers in the creative field. Illustrators, web designers, logo designers, marketing experts and more. I’m constantly recommending PeoplePerHour to other business owners as this is my go-to place to hire people.

What’s the favourite project that you’ve completed through PeoplePerHour?

My favourite project has been the Tech Pack project where I hired a technical illustrator for my first few designs, she was great to work with and it was with her illustrations that I designed and launched my first collection from (see below).

What advice would you give to other buyers using PeoplePerHour for the first time?

When you’re using PeoplePerHour for the first time, it’s important to ask questions, read through reviews of every freelancer, and request portfolios. I would also recommend hiring beginners too as it’s great to keep contact and watch the growth in freelancers.

What’s your favourite thing about working with freelancers on PeoplePerHour?

Freelancers are professional managers in their own field, therefore when you hire a freelancer you’re gaining concentrated expertise in your business. There is no training involved because freelancers are hired to do what they’re already great at.
