What you get with this Hourlie
I am a qualified, professional and experienced editor with over a decade of experience and a love of sci-fi / fantasy / historical fiction. I have an MA in creative writing and work full-time mentoring authors either through agencies or independently such as via this site.
You can see more about me on my website: www.kelleytownley.com
I am not a proofreader but a developmental editor (aka substantive, structural, stylistic, content or line editing). I look at things like structure, pacing, plot, tone, character development, target audience suitability etc. I act as a mentor to authors who want to develop their storytelling skills.
This differs from proofreading / copy-editing which mainly looks for technical errors in the text.
WHY DO YOU NEED AN EDITOR?
Whether you are planning on self-publishing or submitting to an agent/publisher it is really important to make your book the best it can be before you send it off. Sharing your work with others and getting feedback is a must as often an author is so close to their own work that they can't see where it needs a little help. Friends and family can be great support but when it comes to industry level constructive criticism you need someone with knowledge and experience. This is where I come in.
The fiction market is extremely hard to get into and although I can't promise specific results I can help you improve your writing, avoid basic pitfalls and get you nearer the top. You don't want to put months or years into a project only to get bad reviews or a quick rejection because you made an avoidable error.
Send me the first 30 pages of your book (around 7.5k words) and I will produce a report that covers both specific comments on the manuscript and more general thoughts on the story overall.
What you do with this report is completely up to you. I don't pretend to know everything or that following my advice will land you a MEGA deal but not everyone has people around them who have the necessary skills to help us move on with our writing. I do have those skills and can share what I know with you.
I am also nice and friendly to deal with :-)
What the Seller needs to start the work
Please send me 30 pages of your book (around 7.5k words) and a paragraph or two about what you hope to achieve with it - traditional publishing or self publish etc.
Thank you Kelley for your insightful critique. It was exactly what i was looking for. Something highly constructive so I can go back to my manuscript and rework on it to make it better. Much appreciated.
My pleasure. Good luck with it!
Extremely professional as always.
Would highly recommend.
I'm really pleased I went with Kelley, the feed back she's given is phenomenal!
Will definitely work with her again.
Excellent work for insightful comments.
I can't tell you how useful Kelley has been! Oh, go on then - she was easy to communicate with, quick to respond, did the work in fantastic time and has given me a really good, structured motivational kick up the behind to just 'get on with it'!! Thank you thank you thank you.
Ha ha! Thank you :-)
An excellent review within a fast time. Very useful
I love working with Kelley. She has a good eye for detail and gives honest feedback.
I commissioned story notes for a short piece of fiction from Kelley when I needed to shorten my editing time on the work to make a deadline. I was very impressed with her notes, and have incorporated many of her suggestions into the second draft. I am an agented novelist who studied Creative Writing at the Masters level.
