I have mixed feelings about this client; hence, only three stars. Writing an ebook on becoming a successful freelancer in a month seemed like an exciting project. However, when I asked Mike whether he wanted me to write in UK or US English, he ignored the question. I sent him the chapter names and suggested a few headings. He chose the title “How to Become a Successful Freelancer in a Month” and didn’t comment on the chapter names. I concluded he was okay with the chapters. After I sent the first draft, he quickly gave feedback and said his feeling was that it was good but that I’d have to stop using gendered language. After marking up everything, he said again that overall, it was good. He just said my use of idioms slowed the reading cadence. He also suggested I divide the tasks into days rather than chapters since the heading was “How to Become a Successful Freelancer in a Month.” Why didn’t he tell me in the first place that he wanted everything divided into days? That was not just about figuring out what to do on days 1, 5, 10, etc. It also meant I’d have to change the section breaks in Word to amend the headers. I told him that was a lot of work that we hadn’t agreed on and that he’d have to pay extra for that. As for his criticism about my use of idioms - I admit I was being oversensitive, and my answer was inappropriate; I couldn’t help feeling “lectured.” But what followed afterwards was not okay. To cut a long story short, he requested edits but no longer wanted to work with me due to my response. I offered to do the edits, but he insisted that the two of us were “not in sync.” He haggled, and eventually, I gave him a discount of £250 because he refused to pay the total amount even though I’d delivered the manuscript of the whole ebook, which was, I quote, “overall, it’s good.” I agree that my response to his criticism was inappropriate, but so was his haggling. He chose not to complete the project with me, so he shouldn’t have received a discount.
Dear Mike, two stars don't match your words, "overall, it's good." I'm going to report your review as defamation.
