Description
Experience Level: Expert
Project Description:
I am looking for an experienced developmental editor who specializes in the cosy mystery genre to provide a comprehensive Manuscript Evaluation (editorial letter) for my completed rough draft.
About the Book: Genre: Cosy Mystery
Word Count: Approx. 100,000 words (I am aware this is on the longer side for the genre and am open to structural advice on where to tighten and trim).
Current State: The work has gone through several drafts. The prose is relatively clean, but the overarching mystery mechanics need a professional eye.
What I Am Looking For:
I do not need line editing, copyediting, or proofreading at this stage. I am strictly looking for big-picture feedback delivered via a detailed step-by-step editorial letter.
I need you to read the manuscript and evaluate:
Plot Holes & Logic: Are there gaps in timelines, suspect alibis, or character motivations?
Mystery Mechanics: Is the balance of clues and red herrings effective? Does the reveal feel earned but not overly predictable?
Pacing & Structure: Where does the story lag? Where can the narrative be tightened to bring the word count closer to genre standards?
Character Arcs: Does the amateur sleuth’s internal journey make sense alongside the murder investigation?
Ideal Freelancer Requirements:
Proven experience editing cosy mysteries (please mention past titles or authors you have worked with in your proposal).
A firm understanding of cosy tropes and reader expectations.
Honest, constructive, and actionable feedback.
How to Apply:
When submitting your proposal, please provide your flat-fee rate for a 100,000-word Manuscript Evaluation. Additionally, please include a brief sample of a past editorial letter or structural critique you have done (redacted for confidentiality is perfectly fine) so I can get a feel for your feedback style.
