Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
We are developing a large web site for launch in October. We have design completed using html, CSS and javascript/JQuery.
We now need to apply the design to a large number of pages on our site. This will entail mostly formatting of text pages and forms.
For each section, we have a document to describe our needs. The task would entail taking pages from our existing site (cut from web) and restyling the content and the menus to our new design. Many examples will be provided.
Our technical standards must be adhered to
HTML
All HTML must be valid, well-formed XHTML1 Transitional.
Deprecated elements and attributes should be avoided.
Tables are not to be used for layout. Tables are acceptable for tabular data, in which case they must
be properly structured with all of the required elements present.
CSS
CSS must be valid for IE6, IE7, IE8 and current versions of Firefox, Safari, Chrome and Opera on PC
and Mac. Some minor degradation (ie misalignments of a pixel or two) for IE6 is acceptable provided functionality is complete.
CSS should use classes in preference to ids unless the element needs to be addressed by JavaScript. CSS should re-use existing classes from the supplied style sheets if possible. Limiting the styles to
those present in styles.css is preferable (this is included for all pages on the site). If other style sheets
are used, the minimum number should be used.
If you need to create your own style sheet, create a single style sheet for the entire section you are
working on.
Inline CSS is not allowed.
If you are only referring to one or two classes from a style sheet (other than styles.css) you can copy the styles into your own style sheet and rename them rather than force the page to include another style sheet that is barely used. If you do this, ensure that you annotate the style sheet to indicate the source for each derived rule (reference both file name and selector).
JavaScript
JavaScript should be avoided unless genuinely necessary for the functioning of the page. You will be briefed if this is a requirement.
If JavaScript is used, the page must function acceptably without JavaScript. JavaScript can only be an enhancement for JavaScript-enabled browsers, not a requirement for all users.
Any JavaScript must be referenced as a single external script which will be loaded at the bottom of the page.
Inline JavaScript is not allowed.
We use jQuery 1.4.2 and jQuery UI 1.8.2 and these libraries are loaded for each page. Any script supplied must be compatible with jQuery and run within $(document).ready(function () {}.
Scripted functionality should be attached to elements using appropriate jQuery selectors.
Note that we have removed the JavaScript from the supplied templates. If you need to include
jQuery or jQuery UI, add the appropriate external script elements at the bottom of the page before
the closing body tag, followed by your own external script element.
We are looking for competent and experienced designers to work with us over the next two weeks. There is a lot to do!
