Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Estimated project duration: 3 - 4 weeks
I’ve updated the briefs to answer some questions. I’ve also provided a clearer outline of the FINAL BRIEF. Please don’t apply for the INITIAL BRIEF if you won’t be able to complete the FINAL BRIEF. I’ll pick 2 X illustrators to complete the INITIAL BRIEF and then I’ll pick the one whose style best fits the text to complete the FINAL BRIEF and, if picked, you’ll need to be able to complete the final brief.
The initial brief is paying £35 (I will pick 2 x illustrators)
The final brief is paying £350 (I will pick 1 of the illustrators from the initial brief)
INITIAL BRIEF: £35
I would like a (preferably) colour illustration of Rudolf and Father Christmas/Santa Claus characters. They don’t have to be finished off perfectly as this is just the initial brief. I’ll provide you will full character profile for the initial brief, plus the text itself so you can get a feel for the style. I’m going to commission two sets of drawings and then pick the illustrator I think fits best with my vision for the book for the final brief. (below)
NOTES ON INITIAL BRIEF:
Here is the concept: A drunk, naughty reindeer. Imagine the reindeer acting as many do at their staff Christmas Do, but amped up a little. And an exasperated Father Christmas/Santa Claus. I want it to be cheeky, silly, a bit rude, but not completely OTT. Both the text and the illustrations will be aimed at an adult audience but again, not too risqué as to be vulgar. Still some element of ‘cute’ there please.
I’d like the illustrations to be quirky. I don’t want something that looks straight off a stock Christmas card. I’m not so keen on soft edges, I usually like facial features. I like exaggerated features. But really I’m looking for something quirky and original and, until I see it, I’m not yet sure what that will be.
I worked as a graphic designer for a few years so, creatively speaking, I should have a good idea what I’ll want, though I’ve no drawing ability myself.
I would like the initial project designs to be completed within ONE MONTH of undertaking the work/accepting the brief.
Send me some links to your work if you’re applying for the brief!
OUTLINE OF THE FINAL BRIEF: £350 (one illustrator will be picked to complete the work)
The final brief will be for a set of illustrations using these two characters (and a few secondary characters) for a book (it’s a Christmas-themed poem of approx. 750 words).
The book will be circa 30 pages but NOT all the pages will be illustrated. You’d be looking at about 15 illustrations (give or take a little). I think the dimensions of the pages will be 13x 12 cm (so, quite small) I’ve attached AN IMAGE, not to represent the style of illustration but to show how the book might be laid out. i.e. image on one page, 4 lines of the text on the opposite page, so approx. every second page illustrated.
I’d also require the front and back cover design. Ideally all the imagery would be created in Adobe Illustrator (or similar) and sent over in AI files (and high res jpeg) so that I can resize the vector images and select parts/groups. If you have InDesign skills to help with layout that would be good but not essential.
The main project will take place starting from mid-late March and continue for 4-6 weeks, maybe more if you have other commitments. I’ll be moving house at this time though so the dates aren’t yet set in stone. Most importantly, though, I need the right illustrator, in which case we’d need to come to a mutual agreement re. timescale.
GENERAL
I’d like to work with someone with ideas and suggestions. And somebody who’ll be able to converse on skype at regular intervals along the way (when we get onto the main project) and is able to accommodate feedback/changes. You will be credited on the main project (the book – both on the cover and inside) when it is complete though I will own the initial illustrations and the illustrations for the final project. There’s the possibility of extra money if I can get the book published, but I know how difficult the publishing industry is so can’t make concrete promises there.
Any questions, please ask.
