Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
General information for the business: We install electronic pet fences across the UK
Description of legal work: I feel I have been miss sold on a new web site that I commissioned - I received an estimate for:
Website Design, Build, Hosting & Support - it reads the company want a new web site built, as the current website is looking rather dated and is not mobile friendly....
The company built the site without consulting myself or my colleagues - most of the copy and content was copied from our old site and they became difficult when I complained that we did not like the site and wanted new up to date images and content.
They have issued me an ultimatum either I have a meeting with them at their offices where we can discuss what they will do for me and how much they are going to charge for work they deem as extras or I pay up in full and have the web site completed elsewhere. I thought I was purchasing a new web site and therefore I should not be charged extra or have to settle for something that I do not like.
Extra notes: We have commissioned a company to build us a new site - we received proposal and accepted the price - we paid a 50% deposit on 7th Jan and was informed that someone from the Design Team would call me - no one called and I had to chase up - I was not contacted until 4pm on Friday 16th Jan. I was at the post office when they called and then on leave from 18th - 21st Jan. Upon my return a meeting was arranged with Design Team for 28th Jan - at this point they brought in a mock up of our home page, which we loved - I expressed concern at the meeting that content had been copied and pasted from our old site to the new but was reassured that this was just to demonstrate the site. On 3rd Feb I received a call to say that the site was nearly ready for sign off - I was horrified as we had not been consulted about content or where the pages were to go. I had assumed that we would be contacted and updated regularly to ask our opinion/advice as the site progressed. I sent an email to expressing my concerns and dislike of the new site (I was leaving early on morning of 4th for a business trip). I received a response via email on 6th and it was agreed that we would have a meeting on 18th Feb upon my return. Unfortunately whilst i was away they bowled on with the web site and when I returned I was again appalled by the work - I spent hours printing pages to mock up what we required but at the meeting on 18th they were not really interested. They agreed that they had misunderstood our focus and we I then started to send over copy and images so that we could obtain the look and focus we required. Obviously this was more work than they had envisaged as only a small amount of the amendments were made and since then work has ceased and we have come to a stand off. I called an emailed on 6th March and was promised a response on Mon 9th - this did not come, I emailed again 11th to chase up and finally received a response yesterday.
I have now been informed that they did not quote for a new web site - that is was a freshen up and that it was not agreed to add new copy or content to the site. The estimate states 19 hours for copy writing and adding content (estimate can be forwarded).
The structure of the new site does not work for us - and the shop that they have produced is of very poor quality. We feel that our current site, although dated is superior to the site they have produced and this is mainly due to the fact that we know our business and should have been consulted on the mapping and content.
They openly admit that they pushed on with the development without consulting me
"As the development team had a schedule to work to and a deadline to meet, we took the decision to press-on with the build without approval of the initial creative"
