Dr. Poonam Gulia Rawal
Poonam Gulia-Rawal is an Ayurveda Consultant with a BAMS (Bachelors in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) from India in 2001. She completed her Masters in Dietetics from Glasgow in 2005. She has an extensive experience as an Ayurveda consultant and specialist dietitian. Poonam’s training includes the study of Western medicine and surgery as well as traditional Ayurvedic Medicine. Under one roof she combines her traditional Ayurveda and western Dietetics knowledge to provide a unique combination of both - the traditional and western sciences to help treat the most complex conditions in the most holistic way.
Poonam has worked in dietetics as a specialist dietitian in Gastroenterology in the NHS Trust for 11 years before perusing her own private clinic in Birmingham. She is highly motivated and passionate about her clinical work and has a wide range of experience. She specialises in nutritional gastroenterology and has a particular interest in IBS, inflammatory bowel disease- Crohn’s and Colitis, Functional gut disorders, Coeliac disease and food intolerances, to name a few.
Achievements-
Co-author for the BDA’s National guidelines for the dietary treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in the UK (2012, 2016)
Expert advisor for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines on Ulcerative Colitis.(2013)
Received National level recognition award- ‘Roll of Honor’ of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) for her contribution to the research in the areas of dietetics.(2011)
Lectured dietitians and health care professionals and patient groups to help them achieve dietetic understanding of various conditions.
Led the production of dietary resources on Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Elimination diets- working with the British Dietetic Association and Nutrition and Dietary Resource-UK (NDR-UK).
Involved with the editing of the ‘Manual of Dietetic Practice’ - the main dietetics textbook for the Dietetics course in the UK universities.(2014, 2016)
Poonam provides specialist evidence-based, personalised dietary advice and written resources to support patients to manage their condition, together with their medical treatment. She is well trained in both Asian and western foods to help her patients with the best guidance and advice from both traditional and Western food cultures.
