To what extent has truancy influenced the offending careers of boys and young men in youth offending institutions?

The study aims to understand better characteristics of young men who experience problems at school and who may be considered ‘at risk’ of offending. What do we know about what is effective in preventing this group from becoming included in crime.
• The objectives of this study are to examine the different levels of educational problems these vulnerable young men face, especially truancy and exclusion.
• Examine research evidence about the characteristics of young men who truant or are excluded and men who offend and the extend these overlap.
• Review research evidence in strategies that are put in place at school to resolve these problems.
• Explain the evidence about other measures that can be used to prevent offending.
