Optimize my website for smart phones and tablets

I have Moesia theme and I am really happy with the look of my website on laptops and desktops but, when viewed on mobile devices, it doesn't perform as I would like it to. For example, images come up either too big or too small or with the wrong alignment; there is too much 'white space'; and paralax effects don't work. I know Moesia is supposed to be fully-responsive and the site works but looks unprofessional - I have added some custom CSS and wonder if this has counteracted the functionality on mobile devices.

I am also interested in making my site faster on all platforms.
