I am looking to improve the search interface on both desktop and mobile for trueresident.com
On the responsive/mobile version of the website, I am seeking to implement an overlay screen that would appear when a user clicks on the search field in the navigation bar. The current search field in the navigation bar would act as a button that launches the overlay screen (opposed to the typeable search field it currently is). Since the navigation bar is located on every search page, this function likewise must be able to launch on any page.
The overlay that would appear will be a set of advanced search options (more optional choices). The default fields (ie. always displayed) would be a search bar with suggestions that change as the user starts typing (this function is already in place), the four main category selectors—”Events”, “Food & Drink”, “Lifestyle” and “Recreation”, a sliding price scale (to be built to replace the current checkboxes), and two fixed dropdown menu: the “Region” dropdown menu as well as the “Amenities” dropdown menu. See http://bit.ly/2kPmTsJ PAGE 3.
Furthermore, if a user is to select any of the four main categories, additional dropdown menus associated with that category will instantly populate below the two fixed dropdowns. See http://bit.ly/2kPmTsJ PAGE 4. For example, if a user clicks “Food & Drink” all the sub filters associated with just that category will become available.
Once the user selects “Update”, the website will load the user’s criteria and display the search results on the current results page, with the appropriate matches.
On the search results page only, the bottom of the screen will have two fixed buttons: “Filters” and “Results”. See http://bit.ly/2kPmTsJ PAGE 1. Selecting “Filters” will launch the same overlay screen as before. Selecting “Map” will display all search results on the map view (this function is currently hidden under the fixed menu at the top. The function just needs to be moved to the bottom location just mentioned). When on Map view, the two fixed buttons at the bottom of the screen will then say “Filters” to return to the search overlay screen and “Results” to return to the results page. See http://bit.ly/2kPmTsJ PAGE 2
On desktop, all proposed changes in this project will be limited to the search results page (found on https://trueresident.com/search/)
We would start by reordering the default search fields to display only the search bar, category selectors and the price slider. See http://bit.ly/2kSzQyc PAGE 1.
All additional filters would be displayed only once a user selects the “Filters” button. When the “Filters” button is selected, the search field expands to the bottom of the page as an overlay where scrolling is now limited to just the filters. The dropdown menus “Region” and “Amenities” would be visible immediately. If a user is to select one of the four category selectors, additional filters will populate (this function is already in place). See http://bit.ly/2kSzQyc PAGE 2.
If the user does not click the “Filters” button, when the user scrolls past this area to browse search results, the bar that has the “Filters” button and search result total would lock to the top of the left half of the screen under the navigation bar.
See video for demonstration of these desktop features: https://www.useloom.com/share/10323620e67f11e68800a115aa7d5921
Lastly, rather than dropdown menus, on both mobile and desktop I would like to mimic the sleek expandable checkbox area you can find on airbnb.com. See video for demonstration: https://www.useloom.com/share/21282750e68411e68504256c5d717d05
Our system currently has the checkboxes set but does not hide and expand them like this. We would like this function to be added since it’s more user friendly.

Thank you in advance!
