We have created a powerful design system based on Excel and Visio which allows us to calculate acoustic properties and then provide acoustic treatment layout drawings and reports. As our company grows we are looking to offer this solution to our distributors as a dedicated application rather than a collection of Office Files!
Other than simple formulas, most of the development in Excel is done using VBA and similarly, the extraction of data from Excel by the Visio is also handled by VBA which means that it should be straightforward to understand our system and should not require too much maths by the developer. What will be absolutely critical is the ability to create the report drawings and allow the manipulation of elements on those drawings.
Why is this element is so important? Our typical project is a rectangular room which contains listeners, speakers and acoustic treatment. The relationship between room, speakers and listeners is what dictates where the treatment goes and the easiest way to update these elements is to visually drag them to the required locations. A cinema layout is fairly well defined so it is possible to have a quick “wizard” to ease data entry before allowing modifications.
I have attached current outputs from the system to help clarify what we are looking to do but will require a signed NDA before supplying the Excel and Visio files.
Currently all data is entered into a dashboard in the excel file. This data is mainly xyz coordinate data that defines the location of each listener (round coloured circles on layout), speaker (smaller grey rectangles on layout) and quantities. These are then used to calculate the reflections per surface (small coloured squares on layout) and some other parameters shown only on the report document.
No data is currently entered directly to the Visio file, it simply pulls everything from the excel.
Almost all text content in the report is boilerplate. There is a small summary section that is project specific and all charts are taken directly from the excel.
We have in house graphic design / UI design who can work with you on the creation of visual elements and let you focus on the technical operation!
In our dream world this would probably be a cross platform web app but a solution that runs on windows PC is perfectly acceptable for us also.
