Make small design & function changes to an EKM Powershop website

Extra notes: I have been using EKM Powershop for my online website for 3 years. As part of a business re-branding exercise plus a general sprucing up of the site, I have begun changing the site through the Test Shop facility. This allows me to work on another template or design behind the live shop. I have selected the template I wish to use and I am basically happy enough with fixing the site to my requirements.

However there are a couple of elements within the template I would like changed.
The main thing I want changed is the Primary Category Selection (seen on all pages). This is currently a column listing every category (getting rather long). I want this changed from a list (of selective buttons) to a drop down.
The second thing I want changed is to make any variants or option selections on pages larger and easier to read.

I've managed to make changes before using the HTML code pages for the various theme, page & category layout elements within the design section. I will set up a designer log-in for anyone who wishes to view the design section of my site.
