Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
General information for the business: We refurbish and sell used IT equipment
Database management system (DBMS): Microsoft SQL Server
Description of requirements/functionality: Our stock control system is built around a remote MSSQL Server 2008 R2 database with MSAccess frontend on local client PCs. Client-server communication is via ODBC connections that are made only when an operation is performed. Most of the system operations/functions are written in vba within the ms access application with a few stored procedures, constraints, triggers as needed in the MSSQL db.
Our latest version of the client app was developed by a freelancer who has taken a permanent role and is unavailable for debugging and fixing. This project is to complete the job and create an error-free release (or at least a high confidence).
- Fix known issues
- Conduct further testing and fixing as necessary in the app and database.
- Ensure any changes in the test db are copied over to the production db at "Go live"
- Support the "go live" and fix any issues arising promptly
Specific technologies required: MS Access, vba, MSSQL Server 2008 R2
Extra notes: 1. I have a spreadsheet listing known issues to date - I will update this before the start of this project and make it available as a start point.
2. All initial bug fixing and testing will be via a test database. When all known issues are resolved we will switch to the live production database.
3. It is unclear whether any changes have been made in the test database for this release (eg tables, views, stored procedures) so we will need to check this out before going live.
4. There is also a small change of updates in the production database that are not in the test database so again we will need to check this out and be careful not to "unfix" previous fixes.
5. This project will be successful only with good, regular communication. I will require regular updates (preferably daily) of current status.
6. I understand that it is very difficult to predict what issues will arise so it is difficult to know exactly when the project will finish. However, I need to know throughout the project how many hours you are able to devote for the next two weeks and what you expect to get done in that time. This is essential for budget planning and management.
7. I am very busy with other projects too so I am hoping that you will test the system thoroughly before final user acceptance testing.
8. Please include tests for robustness whenever appropriate (eg inputs should be tested with boundary values and incorrect data types. Communications should be tested vs no internet connect, etc). The system will need to handle these types or errors and give the user appropriate feedback and options.
9. Please ensure that appropriate backups are available for disaster recover at appropriate times.
