Description
Experience Level: Expert
Hi! I'm starting a regular tech startup post and would love to illustrate it with a comic that humorously captures the core message. To give you an example of the type of stuff I'll be posting...
Taken from an upcoming article on the importance of making senior hires early on in a startup's journey:
1. Frankly, we thought we had it under control. The reality is that lack of experience hides hidden complexity. Deep experience knows what lurks beneath the surface!
2. It’s possible we were threatened by what hiring senior people meant. We had the resources to hire great people, but did that mean admitting that we were un-qualified? Especially after telling so many VCs we’d built something brilliant, perhaps we needed to be more honest with ourselves.
3. Bringing in senior people makes a founder partially redundant. The roles we play at the start of a company inevitably evolve. It can be hard to admit that a role that has become a core part of your founder identity needs to be replaced by someone more qualified.
4. It feels really expensive! “But we can hire 3 x junior developers for the cost of a CTO!” or “this person would be paid more than me!” or “I can do that job, after all we got this far without an expert in this or that area!”. All true. And all terrible reasons!
We'd love to get the first post out next week, and would seek to award the work over the next few days. This will be a regular weekly gig, so I'd love to find someone who really gets what we're trying to do and can have good fun working together.
Yours,
Philip
