Hi
I have a small business where I really would like to utilise a server in our environment but with my limited knowledge of how to set one up I am looking for a little guidance or more appreciated someone who would be willing to setup my sever for me for a fee. I have had my machine for nearly 3 years and have only in the last 12 months opened it and installed Windows Server 2008 R2. From here I have dabbled to see how far I can get myself but can never seem to get anything to work as I require. Below I have given a quick rundown of the machine, its setup and the necessary requirements I would be looking for.
The Server Setup:
I have a Dell ProLiant 360 G5, fitted with 4*x 3.5” SATA HDD drives. (I am looking to add a few more when its up and running)
Each Drive would be used as follows:
HDD1* – Windows Server 2008 Main installation.
HDD2* – (TD) Main Files + Emails
HDD3* – (TD) Main Files + Emails (BKUP)
HDD4* – (LIRP) Secondary Computer HDD (BKUP)
HDD5 – (LITA) Tertiary Computer HDD (BKUP)
HDD6 – spare at the moment
My Aims:
This machine will be running 24/7 and will need to be accessible via the internal network and certain parts (folders on HDD2) accessible over the internet; however this must be secure; preferably with a trace to see who has accessed and what they have accessed. The aim of the server is purely to be a file machine where files can be created, accessed, amended, saved and most importantly backed up; very much like a central file hub. The server will also not be accessible as it’s locked away for security reasons and so will need to be manageable via the intranet or the internet, whichever is more secure.
At the moment all our work stations don’t have logons they just use a standard account to run the machine, we are using both MAC and PC’s with varying operating systems from xp to 7. If it’s possible to generate what I am looking for without users but to still be password protected then this is an option. If not and we need logons would each user have their own or could we just have an area logon?
HDD1 is the main server folder i.e. where windows is / fresh version to be installed. Also this would have an email client on and any software requires to run the server and backups. I don’t have an email client. Would I need to get one or can this be setup in server? Backup function – is this already in the server or would I need to buy software to do this? Any Recomendations?
HDD2 would store our main files and emails. These folders will need to have certain layers of security so that certain people see one set of folder other can see a few sets of folder and some can see only a part of the folder set. At this moment in time it’s a little vague as I am sure of the exact route but hopefully someone can setup an easy way to amend this on the fly. Secondly in this HD would be our email files. Hopefully if I can have this setup that all emails download to here where they can either be accessed on each person’s machine or would be accessible via the server.
HDD3 the first of the backup hard drives. This disk is solely to backup all files on HDD2 – I have no definitive way of doing this yet so if there are options available in WINDOWS already then these can be looked at.
HDD4 the second backup disk will backup a hard disk on a computer on the network.
HDD5 the third backup of a hard disk on another computer on the network.
HDD6 is a spare at the moment, or will be used for files ready to be archived at a later date.
This is the first setup, but if someone has a better idea on how to use a server i.e. not to have the backups in here and have them on an external HUB with a few disks in, anything is an option at the moment.
Access via the internet would need to allow persons to see, amend and generate files without causing issues. They will mainly externally be accessed from a PC however files may need to be viewed from Android devices.
Environment:
The server is in a small business environment with <10 desktop machines connected to it. The router is a NETGEAR PROSECURE UTM25S and runs through a NETGEAR PRO SERVER. All machines are given dynamic IP addresses however the server can have static if required. The server also has two network feeds as originally when this was going to be setup one would be for internal traffic and one for external traffic.
I would be very much appreciative if someone could let me know thoughts, figures and timescales to complete the above tasks. I am mainly looking for someone who I can trust to set this up and hopefully in the future if I find I need things amending, adding or changing then this could be something we could work towards
Many Thanks and I look forward to the responses.
