Description
Experience Level: Expert
I previously advertised for someone with access to a database such as Lexis or Westlaw to find reports on a criminal case which took place probably between 1992 and 1996, in the UK (I think in Wales).
A babysitter drugged and molested several children. At the trial the defendant claimed to be mentally ill and suffering from gender identity disorder. A psychiatrist testified that the defendant was not suffering from a treatable mental illness, but from a personality disorder. The defendant was found guilty and the judge reluctantly imposed a jail sentence. However the judge was enormously sympathetic because the defendant would not now, despite just finishing years of training, be able to practise as a vet. The judge directed that the defendant should receive all the help required for gender identity disorder etc., before going to jail.
I believe that the verdict was quickly overturned on appeal, on the basis that the defendant should have been found unfit to plead.
2 people accepted the job. The first researcher was then unable to do the search because her personal circumstances changed. The second researcher decided that it was not a case which could be found on the legal databases, and looked for more details, which I could not provide.
Since Lexis/Westlaw does not seem to be going to yield results, I am trying another approach.
The original case was reported in the newspapers, but an archive search does not yield results now. It may be that the reports are only available in the original newspapers. I will pay €500 for a dated newspaper report on the original case and €200 for a dated newspaper report on the appeal.
