Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
I have been signed off from work by my GP for coming up on seven months with work related depression. I beleive that my employers are moving to dismiss me.
The main issue of depression stems from work where i'm an IT Manager, supporting 50 users. Up until Nov 08 I had an assistant and coped with workloads well. Having being with the company for 10 years, this speaks for itself.
In Nov 08, my assistant left for another position, leaving me to tend to the IT suppot issues of 50 users. My primary job as IT manager is to manage the IT requirements of the company and work upon a strategic plan to improve IT.
After my assistant left, the newly appointed CEO stated that a new assistant would be appointed. After conducting interviews and selecting a candidate, the CEO placed a headcount freeze an the candidate was not employed.
I was therefore left in a position where i needed to attend to the IT support needs of the 50 users (which my assistant would have dealt with), yet still expected to carry out strategic planning and project work, which led to my breakdown of depression.
My employers are of the attitude that sufficient workload planning would have eliminated my pressure, but it is clear to me and many of my collegues that the employer did not understand IT intricacies, and neglected to provide me with the necessary support.
At a recent meeting with my manager and the HR representative, they stated that they did not deem worloads to be excessive, even with the support function being taken care of by me.
At the meeting, they also neglected to inform me that there would be a 15-20 person increase in staff at the company, which would make my position almost certainly unmanagebale.
I have been lead to believe in conversation with collegues, that in my absence, I have been replaced with someone who has an identical job description, but unrelated job title !!!
At an Occupational Health consultation at BUPA on 26th March 2010, I expressed my desire to return to work, possibly in a reduced capacity initially.
My desire now is to terminate employment with this company, but I feel I have been pushed out, and would welcome any assistance, possibly with a claim against the company.
