Description
Experience Level: Entry
General information for the website: We provide regional news updates to remote users
Kind of development: New website from scratch
Description of requirements/features: We have a customer who uses xml files to display news content on their local web servers installed on ships.
We provide a form of xml that is slightly altered to meet their requirements, but is basically as per normal standard.
The trouble we have is that the news when displayed is very bland - no real headings, and all tables do not have any formatting so look awful.
We have tried to create them ourselves but with no great success.
We are intending to offer them a dedicated Olympic report next month, and so would like to see an improvement on this formatting.
The ships have 2 versions of their system installed, and I am advised that each is different.
The following was provided to me that might help:
Here’s a summary of the requirements for the XML files:
1. V7:
a. Should be named V7YYYYMMDDEuro1.xml
b. Must be character encoded as “utf-8”
c. Must NOT have HTML tags in the header/title () tags
d. Must NOT have line break tags in the tables
e. Must have CDATA tags for the tables to be properly displayed
f. Must have “Fleet News” in the markers
2. V5/V6:
a. Should be named YYYYMMDDEuro1.xml
b. Must be character encoded as “utf-8”
c. Must NOT have line break tags in the tables
d. Must have “Fleet News” in the markers
So we need a coder who could provide an xml file that meets these requirements- but can also include better and more attractive formatting.
BUT the biggest thing is that these files need to be created with minimal effort by our staff.
They are not coders and do not have time to go through every line of code each day.
We produce 18 different editions.
We can create similar xml files using VBA macros in an Excel spreadsheet - but it would be good to have the above files created in similar manner. We can provide this spreadsheet with the code if it helps with the conversion part.
This is really not a big job, but we do need to get it right. We have had repeated failures on getting it to work in the past.
Best bid will secure - but anyone with offering a good solution to how the xml files are created with the correct codewoulbe in best position.
Thanks
Matt

I will provide best solution for XML. Please let me know if still available.
-
Are you in a rush or flexible on deadline?
-
Can/Should this be web based? I.e. do you have a website (local or web)?

Hi Matthew,
I'm a little confused. What is the name of the system which reads those XML files and display them? Is the system available for testing? Could you send me a sample XML file?
Are the XML files displayed suing XSLT stylesheets?
Thank you,
Lucy
