Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
General information for the business: We're scientists who give scientific writing seminars for PhD students and postdocs
Industry: Education
Geographical areas: United Kingdom
Data to include: Description of analysis: Our company runs scientific writing seminars for advanced students in science and engineering. For an upcoming advertising campaign, I need to create a list of the names and email addresses of the key contacts -- department heads or research group heads and their secretaries -- at 28 research centers or institutes in the UK. I've created and uploaded an Excel file listing the names and web sites of these places. I need someone to go to these sites, look around and find this information, which should then be entered into the Excel spreadsheet.
In our marketing campaign, we will we emailing the scientists who head up these departments. We hope to get them interested in inviting us to run our seminar for their students.
FORMAT: The format for returning the information should be: name of the center or institute in column A, and the web site address in column B. I've already created this information. Then you should put the name of the contact person in column C (including a title, Dr. or Prof., etc., followed by first name and last name, no commas), and then the email address in column D.
I've already done the task for the first center: Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics. I went to the web site listed, looked under “Research” and found that was unhelpful. Then I looked under “People” (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/structural-ceramics/people/) and found, listed under “Director”, the name of Professor Eduardo Saiz Gutierrez. Clicking on his name took me to his site where I found his email.
Under “Academic Staff” I also then found three others listed, the first Dr Luc Vandeperre also being named as the “Deputy Director”. We would like the names of people who are close to the Director, as they may make decisions. So, I've included this name in the list. The other two listed look like ordinary academic staff, and are probably not so useful to us. Hence, I've left them off.
Extra notes: The number of contacts to get will vary from one site to the next. It may be as simple as seeing a person listed as the director on the main site, and getting the details for that person and their secretary. So there would be just two contacts in that case. If there are two directors, please get details for both.
However, the main site may instead give a list of institutes or research groups, and you'll have to go to each one in succession to get the contact details. If you need to add new groups or institutions to the original list, please do! For example, for the Wellcome Research Laboratories (https://wellcome.ac.uk/what-we-do/our-work/research-centres-and-institutes) you'll find a list of 15 distinct research centers. If you see something like this, please try to get details for each one in turn, treating each new center as if it were listed in the main list.
Annoyingly, every institute seems to organise themselves differently. Try as best you can to find the key leaders of the institutes or specific research centers. Some key terms may be “principal investigators” or “research coordinators,” and you should always look at the “Contact Us” page, as this may be very useful. In the Wellcome Research example, the first of the 15 centers listed – for Stem Cell research – has a Contact Us page (https://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/contactus) that gives good links to a number of people:
Director's Executive Assistant
Rachel Acland
Institute Administrator
Louise Balshaw
Institute Secretary
Adam Cooley
Research Communications Manager
Dr Abi Herrmann
Public Engagement Manager
Dr Rebecca Jones
PhD Administrator
Jo Jack
Unfortunately, things will be a little different for every university or institute. Sorry about this! The overall task requires some flexibility and ongoing exploration. If any web site gets you completely confused, just email me and I will try to help.
