this piece concerns an account of a trip made to Crete earlier this year. My British father fought in Crete during World War II. My family was given an extraordinary welcome, and our visit struck many emotional chords. One of our Cretan friends has asked me to write this account, but many of the people concerned will not, of course, understand it. It needs a sensitive, thoughtful translation. It contains some subtle writing, though is mostly straightforward. 3,200 words.
