Description

The purpose of document is to describe the scope of work to be performed on the realdealoptical.com e-commerce web application. There are two main areas of work: first is a review of the database schema, and second is the design and coding of xhtml/css pages and minimum php code for functionality. Our current site has some of the work done, and the site is built on the Kohana framework (php) with a mysql database. You can view the current work here: http://www.sourcetoad.com/portfolio/sunglasses.html
Database Review: A preliminary database schema has already been designed and implemented. We would like a review of this design, with any feedback regarding recommendations, potential issues, and industry best practices. This task is consulting only, and any recommendations do not have to be implemented.
Web Page Design & Coding: What is needed first and foremost is the design and coding of a template that can be reused across other pages (header, navigation, and layout). The primary goal of the navigation is ease of browsing the product catalog using various parameters. A good example of this is the (competitor) website sunglasshut.com. Code should be valid xhtml and css.
Mockups
We will need three mockups of the look and feel of the home page in various styles. We also need one mockup for the 1) item page, the 2) listings/search page and the 3) checkout page. As there are three mockups of the home page, we would like the three page mockups to each be one of the three styles. That means a total of 6 mockups, NOT 9.
If you want to base your designs on some sites we really like the following:
http://shop.tokyocube.com/art.htm
http://www.uo.com.au/accessories.cfm
http://goincase.com
http://www.mybrands.de/
http://www.ninewest.com/
http://www.theultimategreenstore.com
We will pick a design and then we would like to implement the design.
Coding
Following approval of the template design there are a handful of key pages which need to be designed and implemented.
1. Home Page This critical landing page should be visually appealing and include areas for call outs announcing sales or featured products
2. Catalog Browsing Page This page will display results from a search (or general browsing). This page should have a column on the left side with options to filter the results on relevant criteria. The main content should have an area for a page links and sorting options, and of course the actual listing of products. Each product listing should have an image of the product, brand name, short description, and price. Desirable features, but not required, are some sort of rollover behavior and an option to directly add the product to the user's shopping cart. (http://www.sunglasshut.com/sgh/catalog.jsp?sf=249 is a good example of what we're going for.)
3. Product Landing Page A draft of this page has already been coded, but it needs to polished and refined. This page needs to display the product image, thumbnails of other images, allow choice of color (and size, if applicable), a large and visually appealing Add to Cart button, text indicating the brand, product name, UPC, and any description, links to related products, and an area for viewing (and submitting?) product reviews.
4. Shopping Cart Page The standard page to list items in the user's cart. Beyond the standard requirements (displaying items with description and cost, links/buttons to update quantity or remove from cart, and proceed to checkout) this page also needs to include areas for cross selling additional products (such as lens cleaners, cases, cleaning solution, etc) as well as trust building text and icons (return policy text, confirmation of SSL certificate, privacy policy, etc).
What we dont need
We dont need the shopping cart php coded, nor do we need the user sign-in/registration done, or contact pages or anything else.
