Description
Experience Level: Expert
Industry: Business
Geographical areas: United Kingdom
Data to include: The FTSE 100 is a list of the 100 companies on the London Stock Exchange with the highest level of market capitalization.
Each year, these companies put out an annual report to shareholders, published on their website, which details financial performance, including items such as net income, earnings per share, net sales, and earnings from continuing operations. For example, the 2015 Unilever Annual Report.
[These reports often include summaries and analyses written by the CEO or a company spokesperson covering key developments].
These are NOT to be confused with quarterly earnings reports.
We are interested in references to the following technologies with these keyword searches in the reports:
Technology
Key word searches
Artificial Intelligence
“Artificial Intelligence”
Machine Learning
“Machine Learning”
Deep Learning
“Deep Learning”
Computer Vision
“Computer Vision”
Bots and Virtual Assistants
Bots OR “Virtual assistants”
Virtual Reality
“Virtual reality”
Augmented Reality
“Augmented reality”
Autonomous Vehicles
“Autonomous vehicles”, “self-driving cars” OR “self driving cars”
Robotics and Automation
Robotics OR robots, automation
Internet of Things and Connectivity
“Internet of Things”
Distributed Ledger Technologies
“Distributed ledger”, blockchain
We would like to know how many references there are to each of these technologies in the annual reports to shareholders of companies on the FTSE 100 between 2014 and 2016.
We have already compiled the list of companies, so simply need you to:
1. Download the annual reports on the companies’ websites for the years 2014, 2015, and 2016. (Typically an annual report is released one or two months into the following year)
2. In the table above, there is a set of technologies. Run a keyword search of each phrase within each report and make a note of how many times each technology is mentioned in each report in the spreadsheet provided.
3. Put the numerical results for each search in the table with the corresponding companies.
4. There are different spreadsheet tabs for each year.
5. In column A, please add a hyperlink to the relevant company’s annual report for each year once you have analysed it. Insert this in the company name column, but please keep the company name as the text displayed. (see cell A3 in the 2014 tab as an example)
