Description
Experience Level: Expert
I'm working on a Sci-Fi Noir novel, 'A Gutter Full of Stars' and am reaching the point where I'll soon need an awesome cover to hide my mediocre writing abilities. Just to be difficult, I don't have a clear idea of what I'm looking for beyond it being a visual masterpiece that will drop people dead in the streets and leave the few survivors with a desperate like need for flesh or to buy my book.
My absolute max budget is $500 if you're going to quote higher then I'm afraid this job isn't for you. If you're a cheeky scamp and quote say $495 I should warn you I'll need to love your cover unconditionally and will cry unreservedly if I don't, in short I will be a wee nightmare of a perfectionist. $350 is more what I'm looking for and will lower my expectations accordingly to just being extremely high.
For the above, I'd like an eBook version and a paperback version.
Last but not least I expect all work to be original. if I just wanted a decent quality use of stock images I could just go to fiverr.
To be at least a little helpful I have included a brief synopsis of what it's all about:
The setting is modern day London, but on an alternative Earth (AE) where 10 years previously portals to other dimensions/planets started opening around the world. Aliens now wander among us some of them defy description, some look just like us. In many ways the opening of the 'rifts' has been a good thing. Earth's economy is booming, major scientific and medicinal advancements are made every day. Music, art, culture have all blossomed with the tide of new ideas and new ways of living.
But.
Earth's population has grown by an additional four billion people in just over a decade and that's not including those who commute to the planet each day. Many are now unemployed and not all aliens are peaceful. Crime has sky rocketed, much of it alien led. Rape gangs, murderous demon worshiping cults, deadly mind-breaking narcotics and entities as powerful as gods are just part of the daily news cycle now.
The last part is where our hero, Mike Shepherd, comes in. A hard-drinking former detective he's worked at DOTA (Department for Transdimensional Affairs) for the past nine years ever since his daughter went through a portal and never came back.
DOTA deals with alien cases too messy or too political for the London Metropolitan Police. They've just been issued with a new case, children are being abducted and returned four days later physically fine but their brains aged hundreds of years. Better yet for Mike there appears to be a link to his missing daughter.
Unfortunately, he's fired before the case even begins for the torture of a suspect and the killing of a civilian leaving Mike no choice, but to investigate the case alone.
The tone is classic Noir with similar language and thus has a vein of dark humour running through it (or so I hope). As the story continues there is travel to new worlds, alien gods, political intrigue and a mystery to unravel.
The 'gutter' is meant to be London and the 'stars' are the portals. I thought it didn't do a bad job of showing the murkiness of the City while having the contrast of wondrous new places. Plus its a riff on a pretty good Oscar Wilde quote.
