Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Your aim is to use GIS and image processing tools to characterise the environments through
which you travel to the University. Your objectives are to capture and store geodata, integrate
primary and secondary data, manipulate those data and display the results of queries and analysis
on the data.
Identify and account for applications of geographical information
• Explain the basic theory and methods of GIS and remote sensing for Earth observation
• Demonstrate the use of geographical information technologies for handling, presenting
and interpreting digital geospatial data
Your task is to design and implement a method to analyse your exposure to different environments on
your journey from where you live to the University. Your analysis must include both a cartographic
(qualitative) and a quantitative analysis of the data.
You should formally assess the data required to implement your method and then download the
necessary data. You are provided with access to Earth observation imagery, Open Street Map data and
census data for Coventry. You will need to source your own data for the route of your journey to
University and you will given instruction in the use of a GPS unit to track your route.
You might want to consider your exposure to or experience of the following during your journey:
• Green spaces
• Industrial land
• Changes in elevation
• Air quality
• Noise from road traffic
Use ESRI ArcGIS to integrate and analyse the data and display the graphical and tabular results of those
analyses.
Your report should include an explanation of the method, brief interpretation of the results and a
discussion of any issues or challenges involved in preparing, analysing and visualising the data.
Please note that the primary aim of this assignment is to assess your knowledge and skills to handle
digital geospatial data. It is not a test of your understanding of the environmental hazards and transport
which you travel to the University. Your objectives are to capture and store geodata, integrate
primary and secondary data, manipulate those data and display the results of queries and analysis
on the data.
