Experience Level: Expert
Estimated project duration: less than 1 week
The challenge: build an after effects template which can take a single photo of a student (as a PNG, no background, just the student) and display it in a visually interesting, subtle, 15-second-long video loop.
It needs to be aftereffects because I'm set up to render AE comps under under automation, populating the template with new student images.
The comp should be 9x16 (e.g. portrait aspect ratio) and, say, 900x1600 pixels. It needs to loop seamlessly.
Render time is important; I hope that the comp renders within a minute on a typical computer.
My company does greenscreen knockout of School and sport portraits, so we see a lot of portraits destined for print. So what happens if we make subtle motion graphic loops based on a portrait of a students and let the parents post them to facebook?
We'll start with one test animation and if the market responds well we'll let parents pick their own style. This contract is for the first sample animation.
The animation should be visually interesting - multi-layered - work for subjects of either sex aged from 7 to 18 years old. It should be subtle, so that you don't get tired of watching it after two loops - ideally people like it so much that they make it the background for their phone. If it's too kinetic people will get tired of looking at it, so subtle effects are more likely to 'stick'. Remember that the student in the composition is somebody's child and the person making the buying decision is their parent - it really needs to feature the student not the graphics. but it needs to be more interesting than 'just the picture of the student'.
You can change the colors of the student’s portrait if you like (blending modes, etc) but remember that the animations will be rendered in bulk with zero artist intervention for each - just swapping out the 'student photo' layer. So you shouldn’t assume anything about the color temperature of the source portraits. you can assume that the framing of the subject is more or less 'passport style' (this doesn't mean that you have to frame the animation the same way). In most cases we do not have access to the student's name, although if you want to do a version where the student's name is included then we have the tools to set the text contents programatically.
It should be something that people have never seen before, and want to share with friends. So I’m looking for beauty and subtlety.
Light leaks / lens flares / snow / spherical backgrounds / whatever you like.
Move the plane holding the portrait png (which is just a png) around in 3D if you like.
I've attached a simple example showing what I mean - this is just me dragging layers around in a paint tool, I couldn’t move the background as a sphere or have the student portrait move in 3D – it’s just an example.

(see the sample output at 0:30)
You’ll see a couple of examples of a portrait moving over a background.
You’ll also see the face given depth using a displacement map. That isn’t our goal here – the student portrait will remain planar – but at least it will have a transparency channel.
When you apply, please show me a portfolio piece showing an aftereffects animation that shows your sense of style. Ideally you'll have an example where a photograph has been integrated into an environment with motion / depth. I like subtle effects like light leaks and depth of field and layering, hope you can show me something beautiful to win the contract.
