Description
Kind of development: New program from scratch
Description of every module: WaterGroup has a number of logging devices which are sending data to a web service. Each point has individual alert settings (i.e. in case there is too much water usage during the night, an email notification will be sent). Currently the number of alerts are around 200 per day. Please note that the use of the word ‘alert’ might not be consistent. Previously the word ‘alarm’ has been used.
Currently, alerts are send via email and an MS Outlook macro is transferring the emails into a MS Access database. The macro needs to be manually activated from the managing person.
WaterGroup would like to have an application developed which is running once per day and transferring all alerts into a DB. The application shall run on a Debian Server and MySQL shall replace the MS Access DB.
Since additional web services will send new types of emails the source code shall be structured in a way, so that it would be relatively easy to add new alert types.
Description of requirements/functionality: 1. Setup a mail syncing service on the Linux service. This will poll for mails from the mail server periodically and store them on disk for processing.
2. Write a program that periodically reads the synchronised mails and processes them to note which are alerts and extracts information from them.
3. Move the alert mails to a different directory and sync this with the mail server. Also update the MySQL DB.
4. Documentation of data processing (separate MySQL table):
- No. emails extracted and transferred.
- No. unknown emails
5. Simple error documentation in text file (e.g. connection failure to SMTP server, etc.)
6. No GUI is required for this application.
OS requirements: Linux

Hi Evelyn
From description it sounds like you are only receiving emails with the process not sending emails. Although electronic mail servers and other mail transfer agents can use SMTP to send and receive mail messages, user-level client mail applications typically use SMTP only for sending messages. For retrieving messages, client applications usually use either IMAP or POP3.
Could you clarify which protocol you are using to recieve emails from you server.
Thanks
