I'm an NCTJ-accredited journalist and hugely passionate about football to the extent that I consume it in any possible way; broadsheet newspapers, online, attending games, Twitter, podcasts, etc.
I believe that football journalism has changed dramatically in recent years; people don't want to be told what they already know or what they've just witnessed with their own eyes (i.e. match reports). They would rather be acutely informed of how and why something has happened and the ramifications of such an event. For example; a news article about Leicester sacking Ranieri is just pure overload. It's been done to death. What is particularly pertinent is trying to work out just what's gone wrong at Leicester, why the players have downed tools, and a debate around the wider issue of managerial dismissals including the pressure at boardroom level, the lack of sentiment that can be applied, and whether football has lost its soul?
Opinion pieces are there to engage and provide the reader with a perspective or learning that they hadn't previously considered. I write professionally and have done so for 15 years. If you run a football website or blog and require opinion articles (which are proven to be more effective in terms of outreach, engagement and social sharing), I would be happy to help.
