I list my specific skills as writer, editor, proofreader, content specialist, and instructional designer, but in a nutshell the description that really encapsulates what I do is "help others communicate."
Included in my specialties is content development -- because to be an effective communicator one must understand how to make a client's message stand out, no easy task in a world exploding with media. This goal is achieved by using a vatiety targeted of engaging, effective content.
It is important to know how to coordinate a variety of media options so they interact in a mutually supportive fashion to create content that delivers the desired message. It takes a comprehensive understanding of graphics, website design, marketing, video, and technology, and how they interact, to create effective content systems.
Like many of us in the freelance field, my route to becoming a writer, content specialist, and instructional designer was circuitous. I have always considered myself a lifelong learner.
As such, subjects that fascinate me are broad and ever expanding. They range from digital communications, media, science, and technology, to history, culture, a love of the outdoors, and enjoying good food and beverages.
Moving through life, I discovered that I also was passionate about sharing information the information I leaned with others, and when I did so, others seemed benefit from it and would often mention that they enjoyed the way I presented it, in a clear and engaging fashion.
The resulting requests to help others communicate became frequent enough that I reached a crossroads, help others communicate or -- simply shut up myself - hence my evolution into communicating professionally.
Sharing information while being conscious of the manner in which you are communicating, and the manner in which your audience perceives the information with the intent that they maximize their ability to understand and use it-- in reality, is simply called teaching. As I came to visualize myself as such, It was a natural evolution for me to formalize my teaching background -- and I received a Master's in Education in 2012 specializing in Instructional Design (ID).
As media and education change, many traditionally separate disciplines are coalescing into a single entity with many facets. Where once there were separate entities such as marketing firms, design house, news outlets, or video firms, the reality now is they all share common aspects that unite them in a new age where education, information, media, and culture are share common aspects with regard to their creation and delivery.
My first job as exemplified that. Hired as an project manager and instructional designer for a pilot educational project, it was quickly apparent that to actually perform my role, I was an educational content writer AND I was a video specialist, a website editor, a blogger, and a marketing specialist.
In fact, most information today is presented in a manner that has specific educative value that is intentionally included as a parallel goal to the information's intended purpose as firms and social media marketing programs are providing this as a "value added".
We in society now receive a lot of information from experts in the field who are not only marketing their product, but intentionally designing their marketing media to inform and enlighten us to build brand identity and audience loyalty.
If you are looking to add an educational component to any project you are doing, as a web-savvy Instructional Designer, I can help you include educational or training components to your projects, like courses, workshops or computer simulations. I am a specialist in eLearning applications such as Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, and Canvas by Instructure.
