My job as a BSL interpreter would include, making preparations before an assignment, searching for specialist vocabulary and finding out about the subject and the people involved, listening carefully to, or watching, what is said or signed, interpreting everything that is said or signed and finding an appropriate way to express what has been said or signed in English or BSL.

I maintain professionally, confidentiality and impartiality, and only give advice if it improves the communication process.

    Work Experience
    -----------------

Summary: I have the experience of working with clients from diverse ethnic backgrounds through my work as a Driving Instructor for the Deaf people.
I have been teaching BSL Level 3 NVQ/BSL Level 3 since 2006: I taught NVQ Level 3 at the RNID as a part of my teacher training in how to teach BSL Level 3, and then went on to teach NVQ Level 3 at Deaf Touch. I thaught BSL NVQ Level 3 and BSL Level 3 at Redbridge College, at Frank Barnes School and at Golden Deaf Hands.

My experience in leading and managing staff is demonstrated by my work at Leytonstone Learning Link where I worked temporarily to provide sickness cover as a Deaf Studies Coordinator for 3 months; my work as Centre Manager at RAD for a 6 months contract; and my work as Senior Community Support Worker for RNID for 9 months.

I have experience of working for two years as a Family Communication Support Worker for NDCS. This job involved providing support to the parents of deaf children in how to communicate with their deaf child, how to support their child’s learning and development through play and activities, and developing behavioural management strategies. I also provided 1-1 support to the child to develop their BSL and learning. I also have 6 months’ experience of teaching BSL to 5 different groups of hearing children at a primary school in Tottenham.

I have been teaching BSL Level 1 since 2004, BSL Level 2 since 2005, BSL Level 3 NVQ/BSL Level 3 since 2006. I have had Level 1 and Level 2 teaching contracts at the Mary Ward Centre, Leytonstone Learning Link, Lambeth College, Enfield College, Bromley Adult Education Centre, Lewisham College and Waltham Forest College, and provided teaching cover for Levels 1 and 2 at Leytonstone Learning Link, Deaf Works, and Frank Barnes School. I taught NVQ Level 3 at the RNID as a part of my teacher training in how to teach BSL Level 3, and then went on to teach NVQ Level 3 at Deaf Touch, at Redbridge College, at Frank Barnes School, at Golden Deaf Hands and around the country at diverse colleges.

I qualified as a Communication Tactics Assessor in 2004, and as a BSL Level 1 Assessor in 2005. I worked for formerly called CACDP now Signature as a Communication Tactics and BSL Level 1 Assessor from 2004 • 2006. I have temporarily stopped doing this work because the specifications for the Communications Tactics and BSL Level 1 assessments have changed, I have applied to attend training to update my certificates.

I prepared and taught a short course in Basic Sign Linguistics, 5 hours a week over 6 weeks, at Leytonstone Learning Link. I am also currently delivering courses in BSL NVQ level 3 and BSL Level 3, this involves preparing and delivering material on Sign Linguistics.

I have experience of working for two years as a Family Communication Support Worker for NDCS. This job involved being a deaf role model to deaf children providing sign language support and access to deaf culture, and working with families to develop their BSL communication skills.

My experience of working within an inner city multi-ethnic context is demonstrated by my work at Lewisham College, teaching BSL to hearing students, supporting the building of bridges between the deaf community and the larger hearing community. I had a class of 16 students from diverse backgrounds and of varying abilities. In the first class I asked the students to pair up and tell each other about themselves, each student then fed back to the rest of the group about the other student: this way I was able to find out something about each student’s background, culture and lifestyle, and this allowed me to adapt my classes to take into account the diversity of the particular group, for example introducing signs which would be particularly relevant to the students. Two students in the class were visually impaired, I adjusted my teaching by producing handouts in large font for them and allowed them to sit in the middle so that they were directly in front of me. One student was homeless, he had been given a voucher to study a course of his choice, he chose BSL as it was new to him and because he had met some deaf people on the streets and he felt it would be positive if he learnt to communicate with them: I made sure that I introduced signs into my teaching which would be relevant to his current situation, for example the signs for shelter and food provision. Another student was a refugee, the rest of his family had died in civil war: I was careful to use role plays that involved friends rather than a lot of use of role plays involving family. One student had basic ESOL needs, her first language was Urdu, I adapted my teaching by accompanying English words with pictures, I also produced handouts for her in Urdu, by using a translator on the Internet. I always made sure that students are kept up to date with the curriculum and any changes.

I have a range of certificates which demonstrate my knowledge of Deaf Culture, Community and Deaf Issues: Deaf Community and Culture Training, CACDP; Level 2 Living History of BSL, CACDP; BSL History, City Lit; Deaf Blind awareness Training, Sense; Deaf Awareness Training, NDPT.

I have a range of certificates which demonstrate my knowledge of linguistics and Deaf Studies curriculum: Advanced Sign Linguistics (Rachel Sutton-Spencer), RNID; Sign Linguistics Part 1 & Part 2, City University; Advanced Teaching, City University; Basic Sign Linguistics, City Lit; STTC C&G 7407, City Lit; Advanced BSL and Related Studies postgraduate course at Durham University.

I am a native signer, and have native BSL fluency. I also have near native fluency in English and a good knowledge of English Linguistics. I enjoy learning both signed and spoken languages, am fascinated by the linguistics of both, I am currently learning written and spoken Arabic.

I often also translate & interpreting English into BSL or BSL into English for deaf & hearing people. Currently I am working freelance as an Interpreter.
