Marketing and business experience gained through three years spent as part of a marketing team. Friendly, enthusiastic, blessed with common sense and a passion for communication through writing.

I started my career working in Computer Operations, and have worked in IT Support up to the present. This background allows me to keep up to date and get to grip with technical systems quickly and easily, complementing my extensive writing experience.

I worked as a full time Technical Writer for over seven years and now produce documents both as part of my main job and on a freelance basis. I have written for various formats including Adobe Framemaker and help systems.

Much of my time as a Technical Writer was in a marketing department where I produced marketing copy – which I have later continued to do on a freelance basis. Recently I have gained an in-depth understanding of marketing using the web and social media.

I also take on proofreading and copy editing – especially essays and dissertations (often for clients whose first language is not English). I can also write, review and edit web content, including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) of web site text.

I am a fully qualified trainer (separately accredited by The Training Foundation and RM) and naturally produce my own training material to accompany the courses and workshops I design and deliver.

Recently I have completely re-learnt my skills in web design, abandoning Frontpage for Dreamweaver and CSS. Two recent sites I have fully envisioned, designed and wrote content for are listed in the Portfolio section (this section does not permit web addresses).

I have a passion for communicating in the written word. I care deeply about my work and will not be satisfied if any work I do for you is not of the highest standard.

I am home based and work from there, but can keep in touch with clients by email, telephone or Skype. I can attend client’s premises but would have to add travel time and mileage to the costs of any assignment for this.

Provide ICT and Training for schools. Involves telephone support and visits. Write material explaining how to perform various IT procedures (target staff have limited ICT knowledge). Create and deliver various ICT workshops throughout the year (including creation of all supporting written material). Part of team that attained ISO 9001 accreditation.

July 2003 – August 2007

Technical Services Officer, Dorset County Council

Web manager for the education area of the Dorset local government portal www.DorsetForYou.com, and the Council’s Intranet. Manage a news page for schools. Member of the Children’s Services Communication Group, Joint Area Review Communication Group and the ICT Security Group. Provide front line technical support for schools and colleagues. Write technical procedures for a non-technical audience. Create Hummingbird reports by designing queries that interrogate Oracle. Software installation. Ad-hoc training. System management of software - including liaison with software manufacturers. Perform IT audits testing the skills of new starters. Take digital photos for use in publications. Set up and operate AV and PA systems for conferences and workshops. Take part in field trials of software. Manage transfer of IT and telephones during office reorganisations.

July 2002 – October 2002

Produced assessment questions that tested delegates’ understanding of a given subject. Wrote audio commentaries that accompanied web based training.

December 1997 – April 2002

Technical Writer, CR2

Part of the Marketing and then Development departments of a financial software company trading world-wide. Produced user manuals and on-line help that describe how to use complex computer systems for an international audience. Created marketing material such as fact sheets and web content. Produced installation manuals. Liaised with managers and staff in the Development, Sales, Training and Marketing departments to ensure that material was accurate and appropriate for the intended audience. Worked with external agencies to ensure that printed material was produced within budget and to an extremely high standard.

September 1995 – September 1997

Technical Author, Hughes Network Systems Ltd.

Part of an engineering team that developed solutions for land-earth stations (that supported communications between terrestrial craft using the Inmarsat-C satellite communications protocol). Created all customer deliverable documentation for that project. Wrote internal documentation such as installation instructions and interface specifications. Liaised with engineers and managers to define the documents to be written, and to ensure documents were accurate and met requirements. Worked closely with software engineers, operating test equipment and examining programming code. Used configuration control software to store multiple versions of documents electronically.
