One would think after being in the workforce for 23 years, that my gray hairs and sensible flats would sit me down and say, "Time to sit and rest, sis". Sorry, aging markers, I still identify with my 19-year-old self who looked at all areas of life as an opportunity to discover something new about herself.

Don't get me wrong, I actually love my current job and have been extremely fortunate to have loved ALL my past jobs. There's a catch. The catch in liking a job is always hustling and always exploring how to improve, which involves thinking outside of the box and constantly saying "What else can I learn? How can I continue to grow?". That does not mean job-hopping, it just means there is always going to be something else to try or something else to explore. After graduation from Oklahoma State in Health and Human Performance, I began my career in healthcare as a Cardiac Rehab Exercise Physiologist. In the beginning, as a lowly intern, I was tasked with tasks like wiping sweat off exercise equipment and washing dirty towels. Through the mundane tasks, I found something that would lead me on the path to understanding that building relationships takes trust and genuine conversations.

I was hired as a paid staff member at the end of my internship, due to the relationships I formed with patients, and wrote exercise plans for post-heart surgery patients and stroke patients. During exercise we would monitor their vitals and discuss home life, their support system, and their nutrition. Each patient had a story and a unique perspective on their future. It was humbling to see the vulnerability of my patients, as well as the resilience. From the grandfather that would beg for more exercise each session because he wanted to make sure he had more years with his family to the young woman with genetic heart disease who struggled accepting her life would be different than all her friends. Their stories and their lives touched me: they had every excuse to be negative or non-trusting but they allowed me inside their world. I felt like I was truly helping people and making positive changes in the world. After two years of cardiac rehab, I had the itch to make a bigger impact.

I knew I was helping people change their life for the better and I thought, is there a way to do this on a bigger scale? Reach more people on a bigger platform? Cue my next job at the American Heart Association, where I was placed in a new role of Quality Systems and Improvement Director.....fancy title for someone who was going to use a web-based quality improvement tool to bring stakeholders together to build systems of care in my territory (Oklahoma, Arkansas and rural areas of Texas). Little did I know this job was in fact 30 jobs rolled into one; data analyst, event coordinator, data entry, spreadsheet connoisseur, diversity/health disparities researcher, cheerleader, marketing, graphic design, WRITER, therapist, moderator, negotiator, budget coordinator, report maker, fundraiser, and scientific researcher, just to name a few. I worked at AHA for almost 12 years and watched people from all different backgrounds, all different areas of life work together to achieve the same goal: decreasing the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and stroke for ALL people.

An example of my day would be visiting hospitals in part of my territory to sit down with nurses, social workers, cardiac rehab, physicians, and administrators to work through their processes on achieving the best outcomes when treating their cardiac and stroke patients, as well as how to reach patients and teach them about preventative health. I may have a phone call with my Cultural Health Impact counterpart to discuss our next event to reach diverse populations such as cooking classes held in area churches or Vestido Rojo, a heart health initiative specifically empowering Latinas to make life-saving choices for themselves and their families. Then I would spend time on creating graphics or written resources (brochures, website and newsletter articles, social media posts) for our Quality team or for area healthcare facilities. My fundraising colleagues and I would collaborate and brainstorm how to take donor dollars and put them directly into our mission of addressing disparities in health and raising awareness about heart disease and stroke. The list of different avenues I took in my job at the American Heart Association was almost endless. It was some of the most rewarding years of my life; I thought I would retire with the AHA. Life tends to throw a curveball when one least expects it.
An acquaintance of mine approached me with an opportunity to work in a communications role for local government. The position had just been created and she wanted me to interview. I initially thought it would be pointless to interview because I loved my job at AHA and my colleagues and the work I was honored to do every day. However, she was persistent and I agreed to an interview. Once I left the interview, I knew this was something different, something outside of my comfort zone, and something that would have avenues to be creative and build relationships I experienced before. With an excited, but terrified, heart I left AHA and became the Director of Communications for a mid-sized city.
In my current role, I am responsible for all social media, including creating graphics, video and images, for several entities within the city, as well as communication with citizens through our social media channels. Internal Communications like the employee newsletter or pertinent information about the workplace falls under me, as well as the newsletter that is sent to the public every month. I also oversee, in partnership with our IT Manager, the city website as well as the City Annual Report, which covers all the highlights each Fiscal Year. I oversee media relations and work with our City Council and stakeholders with how to highlight all our city has to offer to our residents, businesses, and visitors.
Besides my career, what I love most is my family. I am married to the best human on earth and we have two teenage children who we adore. In my free time, I love to read, write (creatively and for business purposes), draw, and travel. We are currently restoring a travel trailer in order to explore our country and experience all the beauty offered to us. Fitness is a big part of our life; we love to lift weights, swim, canoe/kayak, and hike with our dogs.
