    I. INTRODUCTION

The contents of the following report, covers my employment history and experience, commencing
August 1975 to the present date. It has been structured by differing employer sections, the
most recent first, and has been limited to certain employers, sufficient to meet ESSA requirements for relevant experience.

My period of employment, spanning 34 (thirty four) years to date, has been both varied and challenging as well as highly satisfying and enjoyable. It has seen me travel around the world from UK and Ireland to South Africa and Botswana, to Asia, Australasia and the Middle East.

All my tertiary qualifications were obtained in South Wales, UK, culminating in my Higher National
Certificate in Civil Engineering obtained in June 1978 at the West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education, Swansea. This was attained whilst working for West Glamorgan County Council who sponsored me to attend college on a day release’ basis, as well as evening classes.

Thereafter, upon returning to the UK from South Africa in January 1991, I attained my
Professional Engineer status in the UK whilst working for Cumbria County Council. Whilst there I applied
to the Engineering Council (UK) for registration as an Incorporated Engineer via the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. This entailed me passing a formal Professional Review / Interview together with my compiling a 6000 word Experience Report.

Later that year I attended my Professional Review interview with the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers’(IHIE) in Leeds, and in December 1991, I was awarded membership to the Institute as a Fellow’, the highest level of membership available.

I have compiled a schedule of differing Employers and locations together with approximate dates and shown overleaf with the preferred report sections highlighted.

    May 1995
    To
    July 2006
My new venture into the Contract Engineering field as a Civil Engineering Sub Consultant, either entailed my travelling to and from Client’s Offices every week, and travelling home on weekends, or alternatively taking longer term assignments away from home.
In 2002 I invested heavily in computer hardware and software including Microsoft Office, MX (Moss) and AutoCAD and others, which I purchased from TechnoCAD, in Johannesburg, and with a relatively wide cross-section and full portfolio of satisfied client’s, I was able to negotiate my terms of engagement to limit my site visits to one day every week/two weeks and work from home.
In this way, I was able to limit my clients’ overhead by only engaging on a project basis and then disengaging again. In this way I was able to retain clients, who would use my services continuously.
My charge-out rate delivery costs were usually fixed and linked to delivery dates.
I prided myself in always meeting my client’s deadlines etc.
I undertook my own marketing and more often than not, was never out of work.
My Client’s included Mouchel UK, Mott Macdonald England and Ireland, Dorsch Consult and Colin Buchanan England and Indonesia, WS Atkins England, MC O’Sullivan Ireland, DBFL Ireland, Babtie England, Brown and Root England Parkman England, Young and Satharia KZN, FJCES KZN, Babtie England and Cardno Australia, as well as many others including many Local Authorities

    IV. DETAILED EXPERIENCE

    Section 1:

    Cansult Maunsell
    Consulting Civil Engineers
Abu Dhabi, UAE July 2007 • October 2009

    Client: ALDAR Properties
    Projects: Al Raha Beach Development

Position: Principal Highway Design Engineer/Lead MX Specialist

Based on site at Al Raha Beach Development Project Offices, I was employed as a Principle Highway
    Design Engineer/Lead MX Specialist.

Al Raha Beach Development is a major mixed-use water front development located on the Eastern
coastline of the Arabian Gulf on the approach to Abu Dhabi from Dubai.

The proposed site is between Um Al Nar and Abu Dhabi International Airport to the North of the Sheikh
Maktoum Bin Rashid Road (Abu Dhabi-Dubai Highway), approximately 10kms in length.

Cansult Maunsell had been commissioned by ALDAR Properties to undertake the design and supervision of construction of the “Al Raha Beach Development” Abu Dhabi.

The Development is served by a proposed serpentine spine road (Boulevard) that provides the main West/East movement within the development, on the southern boundary is the existing Channel Street which also provides West/East movement within the development. Channel Street runs parallel to the Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Road (Abu Dhabi-Dubai Highway) from which access to the Boulevard and the development is gained via several interchanges.

The development comprised residential, commercial, and retail land uses with future tourist hotels and infrastructure. This comprised of a large amount of open space for leisure and recreational facilities designed to exploit the marine and canal frontages.

As Principle Highway Design Engineer/Lead MX Specialist fulfilling a senior roll as part of a large multidisciplinary Roads and Highways design team,

My roll was to lead a team of up-to 6 junior and senior geometrical design engineers, to provide the preliminary and detailed geometrical designs for the project, in full cooperation and direction of the Project Engineers and Director.
My responsibility included the preparation of all contract base drawings, including layout plans, profiles and cross-sections and details for site. As Principal Design Engineer, my duties also included attending all multi disciplinary project meetings, usually held once weekly, inter team liaison, and mentoring/man management of geometrical design team members.

From the Project Engineers detailed design briefs, I would plan and prepare detailed design programmes to ensure the timeous delivery of the design drawings, details and quantities by the required deliverable date. This included the man management and monitoring of individual design team members, ensuring designs were carried out using appropriate standards and guidelines, to programme and to budget. For this purpose I prepared a means for each designer to plan, record and monitor his own work and progress on a daily basis which I could oversee. In this way ensuring that each designer planned daily to action and deliver their work accurately, on time and to budget

The Preliminary Design Layouts would be prepared initially in 2D AutoCAD from the Master Plan, to meet the specific requirements of the Client. This process was an iterative process
and carried out in cooperation with and in conjunction with other design disciplines. This included Architects, Traffic Engineers, Light Rail Transport Engineers, Marine Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, Landscape Architects, Structural Engineers and Utility Engineers.

Thereafter the 2D Layouts would be developed geometrically into 3D using MX and AutoCAD.

    The Road Network
The road network was developed using the following criterion and specification.

    (a) An Arterial Road (The Boulevard): comprising of dual (3 lanes each way) roadway with 3.65m wide lanes.

    (b) Collector Roads comprising of dual 2 lane roadways with 3.65m wide lanes. Channel
Street is retained as a collector road and at Al Zeina is linked to the Boulevard via an Underpass.

    (c) Local Roads comprising of dual single lane roadways with 5m wide lanes or single two 3.65m roadways

    Arterial Road
The arterial road (Boulevard) comprised of 3 lane dual carriageways, each of which was 10.95m wide, consisting of three 3.65m wide through traffic lanes, 0.3m shy lines and minimum 1.5m to 4.0m wide footpaths, provided along the outside of the carriageway.

Dual carriageways were divided by a raised median that ranged from 1.7 to 8.7m wide with 325mm high kerbs. 100mm high kerbs were used on the outer edge of the carriageway.

    Dorsch Consult
    Consulting Civil Engineers
    Gaborone, Botswana
    July 1987 to July 1988

Position: Resident Engineer (1 year Contract)

In July 1987, I joined Dorsch Consult, Gaborone, Botswana for a twelve month contract as resident engineer on a German Aid Project to construct low cost gravel roads across the Flood plain of the Chobe River in Northern Botswana.

The Gaborone City Engineers Department’s brief was to construct a low cost gravel road, Including drainage across the flood plain of the Chobe River from Katchikau to Parakarungu. This was to maintain, as far as possible, a trafficable route for the outlying Communities scattered across the plain, who for approximately four months of the year are Forced to use dug out canoes for access to the headland.

Two proposed routes were examined and these were investigated by myself from initially Inspecting aerial photographs of the area in flood conditions and thereafter, on the ground By 4x4 vehicle and on foot.
These routes spanned approximately 40kms each and both required the construction of approximately one dozen culverts.

Ground surveys and detailed designs of the critical points i.e. proposed culverts were Carried out by myself for both routes and an estimate of cost, for route comparison was Prepared and compared with budget limitations.

It was decided to use ARMCO’ corrugated steel culverts because of their ease of handling and transportation and the contractors labour intensive construction methods.

The final decision on the desired route was made by local representatives of the Gaborone Authority and local village Chiefs.

The route being in semi-desert conditions of soft sand required a rather simplistic road Design being a side drain cut to fill in sand, shaped and compacted to 100% of MAASHTO Density with water, obtained in the vicinity from boreholes.

It was imperative to locate the gravel borrow pit as close to the site as possible as Overhaul was payable to the contractor. After some deliberation with local landowners And government officials, a suitable borrow pit was finally located at the start of the Job outside Katchikau. Gravel of the Calcrete variety was obtained with a CBR
(California Bearing Ratio) of ’± 3%. Its suitability was a little questionable due to the high fines content but it was the only gravel available on location.

During construction my duties included all site survey and setting out, detailed Designs, site supervision, maintaining a detailed site diary and records, monitoring Progress and reporting back to HQ in Gaborone, issuing site instructions and Variations, site measurements and monthly certification.

The most difficult aspect of the project was the torrid working conditions with dust, heat and temperatures reaching 35 and 40 degrees centigrade on occasion. With the close proximity of the Chobe River, mosquito’s and malaria were a constant threat. The project was completed successfully two months ahead of schedule and below
    Budget.
