Network Case Study
Inspire Energy Limited (IEL) is an national provider of safe, clean, low greenhouse gas emissions energy and remote energy solutions.
IEL currently manages a portfolio of over 500MW of power generation facilities across Australia, utilising a range of fuel sources operating in four main areas: solar energy, natural gas, landfill gas and waste coal mine gas.
IEL’s customers are typically large public companies or government bodies. Other customers include large energy retailers and owners of landfill sites. The Company is focused on significantly increasing its installed generation capacity through upgrading capacity at existing facilities and developing new projects.
Due to recent growth in the company, it is now necessary for IEL to relocate from its current headquarters on the urban fringe, into new office space located in the central business district of a major city.
Whilst IEL is a medium-sized business employing approximately 400 people, it’s headquarters staff consists of several organisational groups and is comprised of 120 people. The headquarters staff are shown below.
Group Function No. Staff
Executive management Company management and executive support 15
Corporate services Finance, human resources, health and safety, and support staff 40
Project Servcies Design and construction of new energy projects 35
Operations Management of remote power generation sites via a 24/7 control centre 30
The technology group has initiated a project that has the objective of ensuring a smooth migration of all IEL’s technology systems to the new building, without any adverse business impacts.
The scope of the project incldues all existing IT infrastructure located in the existing premises, including servers, networks, personal computers and telephones. The major applications include:
• Control Centre management systems, including supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.
• Local file and print servers, which are integrated with other company servers at different locations, and at a central data centre.
• Financial, human resources and payroll systems, which operate on in-house server infrastructure.
• Electronic mail and collaboration services, which are hosted in a external data centre.
• Web-based intranet and associated applications, also hosted in an the external data centre.
The Control Centre represents a mission critical function for IEL. The centre operates on a manned 24/7 basis (via shift work). A maximum of 15 staff operate the control centre at any time. Whilst the loss of a single PC is easily managed by using spare positions, the loss of connectivity to the SCADA system servers would present a significant issue for the company, impacting safety, operational performance, and costs.
