I am currently working on a prosthetic hand design. Fingers are actuated by pulling the cables that are driven by motors. However it is not desirable if external disturbances can drive the finger, hence I need a mechanism that prevents the external world from driving the finger. A mechanism for the fingers to maintain their postures (or even force applied) in the presence of external loads. In short, a small anti-backdrive mechanism (located in prosthetic palm) is needed.
I need a write up that explores the use anti-backdrive/backlock mechanism in this context by:
-proposing 2 theoretically possible anti-backdrive mechanisms
-outline and explain how they work, relevant equations, relevant parameters,dynamic analysis, durability
-contrast the advantages/disadvantages
Other requirements:
-the mechanism should be small (~2cm in thickness to fit into prosthetic palm) and simple
-2D diagrams to illustrate mechanism will be much appreciated
-include your references
One colleague proposed the use of toothless rubber ratchet with electromagnetic actuations or small eddy-current brakes. You may use these as starting points.
The designs do not need to be original, prior-art technology is welcome, but do indicate in your references. Try to limit your document (word/pdf) to 10 pages as its main purpose is to explore options and inspire the final design.
