The Article:
As we all know specifying door hardware on a fire rated door can be challenging when trying to conform to codes while trying to maintain aesthetics.
Our national code requires all fire rated doors to be self-closing, positive latching and a minimum of 3 points hanging (unless we are using fire rated continuous hinge).
It becomes more difficult when specifying hardware on Wood Fire Rated Doors.
One of the most difficult challenges we face is closing the door.
When using surface mounted closers on fire rated wood doors we often have to use thru bolts to fasten the closer to the door.
Most designers don't want to see the thru bolts on the other side of a beautifully finished wood door.
Another option is to use a concealed closer. But most concealed closers will only work on a 20-minute smoke door with a shield.
They will not work on 3/4 HR or 1 1/2 HR Fire Rated Wood door.
Another choice is to use a concealer on the floor closer which becomes very expensive.
Now we have another choice. It's called a Waterson hinge. It's a combination of spring and hydraulic hinges that will allow you a controlled closing of your Wood Fire Rated door.
It's a more economical way to close a wood fire rated door then the use of a floor closer or a concealed closer.
The beauty is you don't see a closer. The closing device is concealed in the hinge.
