Description
Experience Level: Entry
We produce a reminiscence newspaper called The Daily Sparkle. I have attached a copy for your reference. As you will see, up to this point we have gone for short (90ish word) articles. We now want to add a page (e.g.2 columns) which will contain something quite different to the offering so far.
What we want.
We want to combine reminiscence content with an ongoing 'soap opera'. This will be a story/drama set in a 4 star hotel in Blackpool in the 1950s (we are looking to have some 'Upstairs, Downstairs/Downton Abbey' feel to it). It will feature interesting characters, plots and sub-plots, cliff hangers, and the characters will need to become real for the readers.
After an initial period devoted mainly to setting the ground for the story and characters, with just a little reminiscence included, the later columns will develop more reminiscence plus 'cognitive balance' (material that gets the reader thinking as well as reminiscing.)
The aim is to get the readers hooked into the story, looking forward to the next edition.
We are looking for an interesting mix of characters - caustic, gentle, bossy, servile, funny, complaining, starry-eyed - both staff and guests.
Sub plots might include things like staff conflicts (reception team consider themselves better ) , cheating barman, gambling, accidents, kids, - seasons, birthdays, parties, dinner dances, rotary, royal and celeb guests, weddings, etc. + some life outside of the hotel.
Our readership
The current Sparkles are aimed at frail elderly and people with early dementia. However, while these will be the readers of the 'soap' we are also targeting older people who are in normal good health, both physically and mentally. Therefore, while it is important to retain simple, uncomplicated sentences the tone will be somewhat more adult (but not overly so.)
Our ideal candidate
Ideally we are looking for someone who has had experience of post war and 1950s life in the UK. That means that we are very open to hearing from people who are in their late 60s or older. The reason for this is that such a person will have knowledge of the products, ways of life, celebrities, etc that they can then weave into the story to achieve the reminiscence element.
Hopefully the writer will have had some experience and be able to show us examples of their previous work, and they should also have a good sense of humour, as this will be another important quality to bring in. As we all work with Apple Macs it would be an advantage if the new writer was also a mac user.
We would need the copyright assigned to ourselves with no rights reserved. The icing on the cake would be a knowledge of hotel life.
We also need to build up a 'stock' of material so we are looking for the successful applicant to be able to produce a considerable amount of work in the first month or so, after which they may reduce production to simply keep apace with usage.
Applying
Please provide a CV covering all relevant details and before we assign the job we will need to see the applicant's initial chapters - setting the scene and getting the story under way. Please think along the lines of writing chapters of around 180 words, and as a guide, applicants should submit 10 or more chapters so that we can get a good feel for their work. Carers' Notes will also be needed.
Payment
We do not have a big budget for this work. We will leave it to applicants to make their individual proposals.
