Description
Experience Level: Expert
A proven academic writer is sought to assist in writing in a 18,000 word MA level dissertation as part of an MA - Urban Design academic course.
The writer must hold at least an MA level qualification in an urban design related field (preferably working towards a Phd).
The dissertation topic/question can be chosen by the writer i.e. in accordance with any specific areas of research they maybe familiar with as long as it relates to urban design.
The writer will be required to write a 500 word dissertation proposal that will be be verified before the full dissertation is commenced (proforma attached below).
The assessment criteria for the full dissertation is listed below:
MA Urban Design
2010/11
Module 79508: Dissertation
Protocol for the work process
The Dissertation this year will have two alternative modes, one of which a student will select following discussion with and advice from tutors. Mode 1 is a dissertation which is totally in written form, illustrated as appropriate.
Structure and content
The process to be followed by the student in determining the structure and content of the dissertation is similar in both modes.
1. A subject topic area is determined, which
satisfies the following criteria.
a. It is of relevance to the urban design discipline.
b. It contains issues of a theoretical, philosophical and/or ideological nature, which are capable of generating
different responses, and of supporting different approaches
and points of view.
c. It is of sufficient personal interest to the student to sustain
his or her motivation through the programme.
This topic area is to be discussed with tutors, and must be approved by them before proceeding further
2. A research question or hypothesis is formulated, addressed to the chosen subject area. This question or hypothesis determines the purpose and direction of the dissertation; answering the question, or testing the hypothesis, becomes the objective of the work. It must be focussed, succinct, and also approved by tutors.
3. A research methodology is chosen, appropriate to the topic and the research question or hypothesis. This is the mechanism by which the conclusion is reached.
Format
The dissertation is normally to be in the form of a bound A4 or A3 volume, portrait or landscape format, as is appropriate to the form and content of the dissertation. Drawings, charts or similar elements may be folded out if appropriate. Submission of the bound volume is to be in triplicate, and an electronic copy on CD in addition.
Mode1
The dissertation is to be between 18,000 and 20,000 words in length. It is to be divided into chapters, which create a logical structure, comprising such elements as history, analysis, case studies, examination of evidence, or whatever may be appropriate to the topic and the research question or hypothesis. It will contain an abstract, a review of the relevant literature, and a final chapter which draws conclusions from the work undertaken.
Assessment
Each dissertation will be read and assessed by a first reader who is not one of the student’s supervisors, and a second reader who is the second supervisor. They will agree the mark to be given to the work. Assessment will be made based on the following criteria;
• the ability to demonstrate self-direction and originality in research and tackling problems
• the ability to act autonomously in planning and implementing the research, and developing the final piece of work
• the demonstration of intellectual, analytical, managerial and communication abilities
• the demonstration of creativity in proposing new areas for investigation, or in resolving complex urban problems/issues.
• the presentation and communication of ideas and information clearly and effectively, with precision and high standards of execution
In Mode 1, the satisfaction of these criteria will be measured through the quality of planning, research, information collecting, understanding, analysis and decision-making as expressed through the medium of written text.
A selection of submitted dissertations will be made, and will be read by the external examiners. A student selected will be examined in a viva by the external examiner who has read his or her dissertation.

All MA Urban Design Course Team
The Dissertation is the culminating major piece of individual work that allows students an opportunity to demonstrate capabilities of demonstrating the values, skills and knowledge gained on the course by carrying out a sustained and intensive investigation into one topic and to present their findings in a formal written manner. It is intended to build student’s understanding and expertise in a selected area of specialised study and develop awareness of research approaches and skills, abilities to theorise and conceptualise, and to contribute to the development of the theory and practice of the discipline. It promotes independent and reflective learning.
The Dissertation is the largest single module within the programme and builds upon inspiration gained from the issues, practices and theories covered in previous modules of the course. This module is also supported by the research methods covered in module 79503. The student is required to choose a topic which is appropriate and innovative based on a rational and clear research hypothesis, and be able to devise appropriate objectives in relation to it. The student is expected to develop a theoretical and philosophical position which is maintained throughout the project, and to select the appropriate methods to collect information, analyse problems, and creatively propose innovative solutions. Although support is given by the student’s Dissertation tutor, the student ultimately has full responsibility for organising, planning and managing the work.
On successful completion of this module, students will have the ability to:
• To choose a topic which is appropriate and innovative
• To collect and apply valid and reliable methods of data collection
• Research, investigate and express a theoretical and philosophical position on a selected aspect or aspects of urban design
• Organise and execute a major individual written project responding to a self-determined hypothesis or brief, with minimum but sufficient supervision
• Demonstrate explicit reflection on methods, process, and outcomes to improve and enhance research.
• Demonstrate skills in analysis, synthesis, reasoned argument, critical appraisal and communication
A large part of this module is undertaken by the student independently. Minimum, but sufficient, supervision will be provided by staff in the form of individual tutorials.
Formative assessment occurs throughout the module through individual tutorials and is designed to give guidance and feedback on progress.
Summative assessment is carried out at the end of the module on the final piece of work, which is 18,000 – 20,000 word written Dissertation.
Assessment criteria:
• the ability to demonstrate self-direction and originality in research and tackling problems
• to demonstrate the ability to act autonomously in planning and implementing the research, and developing the final piece of work
• to demonstrate intellectual, analytical, managerial and communication abilities
• To demonstrate creativity in proposing new areas for investigation, or to resolve complex urban problems/issues.
• To present and communicate ideas and information clearly and effectively with precision and high standards of execution
Students are supported to identify their own research resources and materials in accordance with their chosen study area.
If you need to discuss this work further please e-mail any questions through people per hour.
