Description

THE ROLE
The successful applicant will be hired to produce the text for a ghost written autobiography. Our customers will have paid for, or have been given as a gift, an autobiography package which includes a 20,000-word account of their life to date – this is printed as a book which they can then keep as a memento and give copies to friends and relatives.
The biographer will meet the customer on one or two days (some of our packages include a hotel break, other times the interviews will be done at the customer’s home) to carry out a total of around six hours of interview covering their entire life, including such subjects as their childhood, working life, families, interests. These interviews will be recorded by the biographer and the typed transcript will form the basis of the book. Six hours of interview generally produces enough content to fulfil the 20,000-word requirement.
The biographer will type up the recorded conversation (or arrange for a typist to do this for them) and then begin editing the transcript into book form, using the words spoken in the interviews as the basis and editing the text into a coherent narrative. The book will be written in the first person. It will be divided into chronological chapters. After editing is complete the biographer will have identified areas needing greater coverage and will interview the customer again over the phone (half an hour to an hour) to obtain material needed to complete the book.
The finished first draft will be submitted to our editorial staff who will proof read the text before delivering it to the customer for approval. The biographer may be required to make minor changes to the content at this stage, or our editorial staff may do this, depending on what needs changing. The approved text will then be set into book form along with 30 photographs supplied by the customer. The end result is a beautiful book the customer and their loved ones can treasure and which the biographer can also be proud of. We set a maximum time scale of six months from the initial interviews to printing of the final book.
THE APPLICANT
The successful candidate(s) will have:
Strong writing and editing skills
Experience carrying out interviews
Experience of producing lengthy written works, able to maintain a consistent narrative over a long period
A pleasant and confident manner
A wide range of interests
Basic historical knowledge
A flexible work schedule – interviews will be arranged at times convenient to the customer
Good communication skills – the customer must be kept informed at regular intervals as to the progress of their book, as must our editorial staff.
The ideal candidate will have experience ghost writing and interviewing. The role may suit journalists who can approach each project like a profile interview. Writers with fictional work to their name will also be considered, though experience in non-fiction will be a great advantage. Reliability and the ability to managed one’s self for the duration of the project are essential qualities.
Our offices are just outside Nottingham so applicants must be able to travel to Nottingham to interview for this position. Proximity to Nottingham and/or London would be an advantage.
WORK AVAILABLE
The successful candidate will be offered biography projects as and when the clients book them, our bookings team liaising between customers and our pool of writers to find interview times suitable for all parties. Several biographies can be in progress as a single time. Aside from the initial interviews, all work can be carried out at the biographer’s own pace and schedule provided the work is done in time to meet the six-month deadline. Biographers able to produce high quality work on a regular basis will be preferred when future projects are being arranged by our booking team.
Payment will be made after invoicing from the biographer. An advance (to be agreed) will be paid when the first interviews are booked by the customer to secure the biographer’s services on that date(s). A second advance will be paid after the initial interviews are carried out and the balance of the project will be settled when the edited manuscript is approved by the customer. Reasonable expenses incurred during the interviews (such as beverages bought for customer) will also be paid. We will support our biographers with suitable equipment where required, though the biographer may be more comfortable using their own.
Biographers will find working on these books and speaking to our customers a hugely interesting and rewarding experience, meeting interesting people and delving into the great stories they have to tell. You will also enjoy the opportunity to show off your writing ability on lengthy works that will be read and enjoyed many times over. Biographers will receive a copy of each book they produce.
