Working Title/Hook
A different way to excite graduates about career progression
Who is this article for?
Graduate and Early Career Managers that are finding that the graduates entering the organization are turned off at interview stage if the career progression opportunitries aren’t clear or exciting enough
Situation
• Potential graduates looking for employers who emphasise clear career progression development and training
• Strict career ladders are often unattractive
• There are limited opportunities for career progression
Problem/Implications
• Career progression is not always a certainty, so it’s hard to make promises, and set defined expectations.
• This could lead to graduates being less likely to take up the offer
• Alternatively, the temptation could be to make misleading expectations which would damage trust
Needs Payoff (How this problem can be solved)
• Offering meaningful, exciting motivating routes to career progression by focusing on strengths development first and foremost
• This can be done in a variety of ways:
o Collaborating with other departments on projects playing to strengths
o Move across different areas of business, an internal varied career path that helps develop strengths
o Develop strengths mastery in current role and mentor others
o Opportunity to carve out new roles which play to strengths
o Upwards progression that plays to strengths
• The reality is that they might not know how they want their career to develop now, but they will be happier and more successful if it to play to their strengths (those things they enjoy and love to do).
• Helps promote a flexible culture
• Takes the pressure off the bottleneck of everyone wanting upwards progression
