Health - Small tweaks, big difference - 7 steps to a healthier you
1000 words
Disabled people are often looking for the small percentage gains in their health and
wellbeing. With lifestyle tweaks they can start to see a difference.
………………………………………………………………………………………………
Please include:
An introduction that explains the broad concept that a shift in lifestyle can create a
noticeable difference in your wellbeing.
Bad habits – looking at different ways of reducing or stopping smoking, drinking alcohol
and caffeine, etc. Mention support (organisations) available.
Look carefully at your diet – understand the foods that could be replaced by better
versions: low fat, reduced salt/sugar, etc. Discuss what a balanced diet can do for you.
Mention planning your food shopping properly, rather than exposing yourself to picking
the things you crave or want because you’re hungry. Look at eating the right amounts of
food.
Exercise – starting to build in more activity into your routine.
Rest – making sure you rest and relax in the right way and at the right time, including
sleep hygiene, etc.
Stress – avoiding stress is the key to better mental health. Discuss ways to switch off and
encourage proper relaxation – mention screen time, avoiding stressful influences such as
(some) television – and even picking the people you associate with, carefully. (Mention
also concepts such as meditation and mindfulness.)
Social – isolation is a key indicator towards depression. Staying in touch with people has
benefits to your mental health. Mention different ideas linked with creating/increasing
your social circle.
Goals – setting goals for milestones towards a better goal will keep you in good habits.
Scale goals sensibly and review them regularly. This should ultimately be a satisfying
experience.
