Description
Experience Level: Expert
Industry: Telecommunications Technology
Topic: Installation, operating and user manual for a new telecommunications product.
Tone: Formal/Professional
Outline & Structure: I am seeking a skilled and proficient Technical Author / Technical Writer, preferably from a telecommunications technology background, to produce an installation, operating and user manual for a new telecommunications product.
The requirement is urgent and you will need to be able to work quickly, accurately and deliver within 3 weeks - first draft 1 week.
You will create and update documentation for the product which has been designed to enable and support the delivery of point to point data services over telecommunications companies’ copper telephone networks, at very high speeds, without the need to install fibre optic or other high cost solutions. The products have been developed in the UK and are destined for trials all over the world. Good quality documentation is a must.
You will research, develop and update documentation, more or less from scratch. You will work with marketing, management and technical subject matter experts to generate and / or improve documentation including developing style guidelines for all similar / future documents. Your work could involve co-authoring, however, it will be mostly working independently, with regular reviews.
The document(s) you produce will be work made for hire. If any such documents do not qualify as work made for hire, you agree that, upon receipt of payment for the work, the document(s) you produce including without limitation all Intellectual Property Rights therein will be the sole and exclusive property of the product company; being deemed to be the author thereof, and you will retain no rights to use, and agree not to challenge the validity of ownership in such Intellectual Property Rights.
The assignment could lead to a long term opportunity to produce additional documentation, copy and potentially ‘content’ in the future.
Extensive research needed: not set
Extra notes: The assignment could lead to a long term opportunity to produce additional documentation, copy and potentially ‘content’ in the future.
Typical documents might comprise:
Installation, Configuration, User, Administration and Operations Manuals, Technical Specifications, Command Line Interface configuration guides and command references, Graphical User Interface configuration guides, online help, hardware installation guides, troubleshooting guides, system message guides, release notes and procedures:
Procedures are designed to describe Who, What, Where, When, and Why by means of establishing corporate accountability in support of the implementation of "policies".
The "How" is documented in the form of "Work Instructions" providing greater detail.
In telecommunications a SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) is specifically designed to describe and guide multiple iterations of the same procedure over a broad number of locations, on multiple occasions, and over an open period of time until such SOP is updated or discontinued. A MOP (Method of Procedure) differs from a SOP in that it contains specific directives for that particular activity, on that particular date, for that specific location or piece of equipment.
The work requires:
Significant experience in documenting telecommunications networking technologies.
Previous LAN, WAN, broadband, xDSL, telephony and/or Exchange equipment documentation experience is a plus.
The ability to translate complex concepts into user-friendly clear, concise information for the end user.
Good teamwork skills. You may be required to co-author documents or to rewrite documents.
Good communication skills with excellent written and oral English language skills. Abilities in other languages may be helpful but are not essential.
The ability to achieve goals and resolve issues, a strong work ethic and the capacity to deliver on time, every time.
The ability to function well, and be flexible, in a fast-paced development environment with demanding deadlines and changeable project scope.
The ability to handle special projects and lead initiatives in addition to core writing responsibilities.
Possess technical knowledge, industry knowledge, champion improvements, and think globally.
The ability to work smoothly with others.
You will preferably be located in Coventry / Warwickshire / West Midlands area. The project is located near Warwick University.
EDUCATION:
Higher education and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience.
Preferred:
Degree in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, or similar.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS [None Mandatory]:
Touch-typing, FrameMaker, Perl, JavaScript, HTML, XML, XSLT, Unix shell scripting, Wiki Markup
