Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
Num. of words: 2750
Topic: INTRODUCTION TO LINUX
Tone: Instructional/Educational
Extensive research needed: yes
Extra notes: PURPOSE
This writing is intended to govern the structure of file systems on Linux by defining a standard set of directories, subdirectories, and files.
REQUIREMENT / Writing needed
Although every Linux distribution has its own unique way of doing certain things, their developers all recognize the need for some standardization in the layout of their directories. For instance, programs should be able to consistently locate key system configuration files in the same places on all distributions. If this weren't the case, programs that rely on such features would become more complex and might not work on all distributions. In order to address this need, the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) was created. Structure your answer to address the following sub-questions:
a) There are many types of files that exist on the Linux file system. List TEN important directories, according to the FHS with their purposes and contents.
b) Describe TWO benefits of the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS).
c) Discuss about File Types in the Linux System with their objectives (Normal Files, Two Special Directories, Device Files, Links, Sockets and First In First Out - FIFO).
d) To create a shortcut for a directory with a long name. There are two links namely hard link and symbolic link. In what situation these links can be used? Explain the difference between hard links and symbolic links.
Noted : no copywriting in any articles. Thank you
