Description
Experience Level: Entry
I'm director of a small Southampton based startup which has a virtual team of 7 freelancers
So far, the company has been selling products online that enable people to be less sedentary at work, which is a big issue for health reasons but also there is a compelling business case. Shortly we will be launching software that gives exercise ideas and reminders to be active. Following on are plans for corporate training services to bluechip companies who are employee welfare minded.
Part of the problem is that the whole idea of staying active at work is a very new idea and so the emphasis is on selling the message in order to sell the products. We've just started a blog with the intention to become a 'thought leader' in the field of workplace activity and to that end I'm looking to build a community who trust the content. In order for the blog to be high quality we need to add a journalistic element to articles such as interviews with various leaders and people experienced in the field ( physios, occupational health, HR, fitness experts, government policy makers). The intention is for it to be quite separate from the shop site with no direct reference to products. I've quite a few ideas how to do this so it would be a case of giving you rough direction and leaving you to do your journalistic bit.
So that's one part of the work. The other is generating PR activity, coming up with press releases and generally trying to generate media interest. I've had some already, all of it unsolicited - a slot on the Alan Titchmarsh show ( scroll to the bottom to see the clip) and a few magazine articles ( GQ, Mens Health). I'm looking for more like that. Actually the Chris Evans show last week had 2 big slots on the subject of Deskercise so the message is starting to get out and so you could be coming into this at a very good time if this is of interest
The final element is that a book on the subject of keeping fit at work is in progress ( about 60% done) and some proof reading, and writing flair will probably be added
I say that was the final part of the role but as is the nature of working for a startup, there will almost inevitably be other pieces of work that come along. For that reason a flexible, positive attitude is key
