Description
Experience Level: Expert
Estimated project duration: 1 day or less
I have a custom-coded WordPress plugin that I created a few years ago. It allows clients to have pre-paid development time with me. Currently that time is recorded in minutes. I’m going to be abstracting that time to a unit I call ‘a credit’.
I would like you to refactor (and improve my code) to change the units, but add some additional functionality to the plugin, whilst maintaining the code style and structure that I’ve already set.
The requirements (I'll provide proper specifics and system access to the successful freelancer):
- I want to change the units to something new, which involves updating the entire system to use new the new unit
- Change time/date field to use the native date/time picker loaded into WP
- Allow tasks/credits to be edited once created
- Change the existing system to use the new units that I want
- Create settings to allow me to edit email templates using WP, using a HTML editor (potentially WYSIWYG), with a preview option and a 'test email' option.
If things go well with us working together, you won’t be short of work from me.

[ About me and the developer I'm looking for: ]
I’m Dan, I run a specialist WordPress development agency, and I’m winning a number of work projects. This means I’m looking for WP developers as contractors to help me to deliver projects.
To test out suitable candidates, I’ve got an internal project that I need help with. I’m going to be using this to assess your skill level and if you’re a good fit for me (and if I’m a good fit for you).
I expect the following from a fellow developer:
- Dependable. This is critical. You must be someone who has a reputation for doing what you say, when you say you’ll do it.
Great with communication. If something goes wrong, tell me. If something is going well, tell me. If you want to pick my brains on solving something, tell me. I want you working WITH me, not FOR me. Usually this means updates via email, but a quick phone call will be important too. I also want updates at least daily.
- Meaningfully (‘well’) commented code, using the normal PHP-doc style of documentation. My code standards are a variation of WordPress’ coding standards, yet more readable.
- Pragmatic, but obviously high quality and efficient code, using OOP PHP when needed, but using simple internal caching when needed, SASS for CSS, Advanced Custom Fields for themes, and internal libraries for plugins.
- A focus on refactoring code, where code is consistently improved each time you work on it.
My skillset is around solving complex problems, so I am more than happy to brainstorm with you to solve a problem before you crack on with the code. My role is more of a lead developer rather than the boss.
As a developer, I'd be quoting for about 2-3 hours of development for this (and I've been developing with WordPress for 13 years). So I estimate this is about 4-7 hours of work for a mid-weight developer or above. (Unfortunately I'm not looking to work with rookie developers at this point in time).
