Description
Experience Level: Intermediate
We’ve recently developed a new microsite to set-up artwork for stationery online (business cards, letterheads etc) but we’ve had some problems with the hi-res PDF files the site outputs.
Print ready files
The site is generating PDF files for print but they don’t seem to be set-up correctly, as the printer is unable to use them.
The printers notes are as follows:
Business cards
From what I can see the business cards are, for the most part, set up correctly. Only one of them does not have the margins set correctly (called page boxes in Acrobat); The others are all fine, but they do need to all be in the same position on the page.
From discussions with the printer, when the margins are not set correctly the press's are not able to identify where the edge of the artwork starts as it just looks like an A4 sheet....
Letterheads:
Now the letterheads are a different problem altogether – I've tried various ways to get the supplied PDF to our black and white machine for overprinting and it just doesn't want to work! I don't actually have a technical reason either which is rather frustrating. I've tried re-saving the file, optimising it, placing it in an InDesign file and whatever I do, it will either not open on our PC for sending to the press or else it will crash whichever program I am trying to generate a new PDF from. It seems the only way we've managed to get the letterheads to work so far is by you guys supplying us a postscript file, which we then distill to make a nice new clean PDF.
The system used is called TC PDF and below are a list of some of the issues than need fixing:
1. In the PDF files there are the RGB objects and they should be CMYK. The Indesign file is OK, it is CMYK. So the system must be converting it with mistake (changing CMYK to RGB).
2. Page size (work space) is now automatically resized to A4 and it should be fitted to the Crop Marks and Bleed Marks.
3. Text in the file should be converted into curves (expand objects) or printed (exported) as PostScript and right now it is not.
4. Text in the file is separated as grayscale — it would be much better if it was 100% black of CMYK.
5. Color bars are not necessary because they are added by printing specialists at the time of imposition.
We ideally need someone that has experience of the TC PDF software to help tweak and fix the site, so the files exported are ready to go straight to print.
