Description
Experience Level: Expert
General information for the website: Development of a web-based live audio streaming platform
Kind of development: New website from scratch
Description of every page/module: We are developing a live audio feed web-based radio platform that will allow registered users to identify, verify and comment on animal calls via a live (-24 hrs) audio feed of three sites within the Malaysian rainforest in Borneo. Unregistered users will be able to listen the audio feed, however users must be registered to interact with the tool. The audio stream will be sent simultaneously with time-stamp information on the sounds heard and mapped via a third-party software being engineered by Imperial College London. They will send time-stamped files that our tool will link with to log and identify the animal calls within the database. Users will be able to select the part of the live audio that they have heard the animal call on and then identify the animal.
The online display for the Rainforest Rhythms internet radio station would include five components targeted at engaging an audience:
1. A continuous audio feed of the rainforest sounds (primarily from 3 separate sites)
2. A visualisation of the acoustic diversity metrics through time.
3. Information about how to interpret the metrics, including summaries from the project Investigators about the temporal trends that have been observed
4. A comment box, allowing listeners to comment on and share what they are hearing
5. Real-time highlighting of the identity of specific species as they call. This will be supplemented by highlighting randomly selected species known to be 'active at this time of day' (eg gibbons in the morning; hornbills through the middle of the day; bats at night).
The HTML/CSS/jQuery front-end of the website has already been developed, along with the design and wireframe that we can share with you. A full set of briefings will be given on the platform before work commences.
We are looking for a developer with (ideally) relevant experience of working with live audio streams and who can build the database and back-end platform needed.
As we are based in London, a developer who lives close-by would be preferred, but not essential for the right skill set. We will ask you to speak to the team developing the audio section at times during the development process.
Description of requirements/features: See above
CMS and Admin requirements: Users can register and amend their profile.
Extra notes: Please see sample screenshots - full designs can be shared with you beforehand.
