Description
Experience Level: Expert
I’m looking for someone to help me create some artwork for a project about black representation in the arts, black female representation and storytelling.
I want to apply an afro-futuristic type lens to African mythology. I’m looking for a photoart style where we use a real model in a photoshoot but then create the background, additional characters around her. I have a photographer and studio lined up but need to find the right graphic designer/artist to work with. Here is a description of the images and very basic pencil mock-ups as I’m not an artist myself but I’m very clear about what I want to create, I just need to communicate it clearly.
Three of the images are mainly involve changing the photo background and making that look realistic. However 6 of the images will require a considerable amount of creation and design, particularly images 4-7.
Looking for a graphic designer/photo artist who also has some interest in the topic
Please see moodboard so far here:

I will share the ‘stick-man’ drawings once I start having conversions with the right person.
Image descriptions below so you can get a feel for the proposed work.
Image 1: Introducing Yemonja. Background sea and sun, sun glistens in Yemonja’s hair. She stands on the sea – her skirt looks like it is made of water. Yemonja is a Yoruba goddess of water, she is the protector of women, children, the mother of fish.
Image 2: Yemonja the mother. Same background, almost same image but Yemonja holds a baby in one arm and holds the hand of a small child in the other. These are her children.
Image 3. Yemonja the mother of many. Same background but perhaps lighting looks more like sunset. Yemonja is trying to look strong and powerful but there are children playing everywhere, some under and to edges of her water skirt. She is smiling trying not to laugh.
Image 4. Yemonja the tricked, Yemonja is seen underwater bound with gold, silver and diamond chains. Towards the top of the image at water surface is a slightly blurry boat with the faces of men peering down.
Image 5. Yemonja the bound. Yemonja is seen in the fetal position on the sea bed, still bound in chains. Around her are many bodies of black people – men’s bodies are closer to the top, then women’s, then children, then closest to her at the bottom are the babies. This is a tragic, dark, sad image, colours, blues, blacks and perhaps a bit of red colouring the underwater tragedy.
Image 6. Yemonja is free – her power and people restored. Yemonja stands rising from seabed. With her power she creates these life-restoring whirlpools which suck in the black bodies restoring them to life and health and depositing them on the sea surface. On the sea surface they are clothed in regal clothing
Image 7. Yemonja’s revenge. With her people now safe, she deals with her enemies. The boat/ship with the white men is overturned, the men are drowning along with their ideologies, represented by their books, also being submerged by violent waves.
Image 8. Yemonja sits. She sits in the sea – happy (without veil) – no other characters, back to original background as sun and sea.
Image 9. Yemonja lies down – She has completed her work, now she rests.
