Description
Experience Level: Expert
*** BACKGROUND ***
We produce instructional videos, primarily for the Web but also for DVD. We're embarking on a new and quite ambitious project that will require something in the region of 100 videos editing over a 3-month period.
Our videos are much more about the instructional content than exciting post production. Our editing needs are very simple but they are extensive due to the number of videos and length of each video.
Every video follows the same format and will require very similar post production without the need for much creative input. It requires more of a 'systematic' approach than creating one-off pieces of art. Just something for highly creative individuals to bear in mind.
*** TYPICAL VIDEO CONTENT ***
Our videos have a simple production process - 2 cameras at fixed locations (one wide angle, one close up filming over the talent's shoulder) and all indoors at our studio.
We shoot between 1 - 1.5 hours of footage per video (1.5 hours per camera, although cameras are shooting the same content from different angles).
All the footage is sequential. In other words, we film the talent demonstrating the content from start to finish in a progressive order. This is how you'll be sent the footage, so you won't have to decipher which takes go where.
*** EDITING REQUIREMENTS ***
Editing will primarily involve:
1) Cutting from one camera to another at appropriate points (90% of the video will be the over-the-shoulder shot, with sporadic cuts to the wide angle camera when the talent addresses it).
2) Editing the 1 - 1.5 hour video down approximately in half (30-45 mins). This will require a fair degree of 'artistic licence' but the subject matter is straight forward enough that you don't need to be an expert to know what can go.
There will be some small additional requirements per video (such as adding in pre-designed into and outro titles, addition of background music here and there) but we can go over these when the project is awarded.
Rendering is something we can also talk about as this is not essential but it may be worthwhile the editor doing this instead of us.
*** WORK FLOW ***
This is something I'm keen to discuss with the editors. We shoot to SD cards so we'd probably have to back these up and then deliver/pickup the content physically (i.e. courier).
Our strong preference is for the videos to be edited using Final Cut as this will allow us to re-edit in future if necessary. However, we are open to other suggestions and offers.
*** ADDITONAL DETAILS ***
- We can send the raw footage from a sample video to help you estimate more accurately how long a typical video will take to edit.
- It may be worth having an in-person meeting to discuss workflow etc and if this is agreed, we'll cover the cost of travel as part of the project.
- If multiple editors are required for the work, we would require a meeting between all parties to ensure there is continuity across the project.
- We're open to suggestions during the filming process that will help make the editor's job easier.
-If this is a project you're interested in, please give a rough estimate of what amount of time / number of videos you can commit to over the coming months (we're assuming an early August start).
Best wishes,
Phil.
