Hi, I'm looking for help with preparing up to 15 short videos to help promote my book Diagonal Lengths: Rethinking our world.
I wrote the book because I felt there were many issues in the world that are entirely man made and that we could change if enough get on board. We all live with the effects of these issues and try and put sticking plaster over the effects rather than address the root causes. The book is an attempt to rethink a number of concepts that we've tend to take as given and sacrosanct.
I also felt politicians tend to be focussed on the short term, re-election and their immediate constituency, leading to a lack of statesmanship, a tacit acceptance of the status quo and no one looking for game changing global solutions.
A consequence is that paradoxically a race that can send people to the moon hasn’t had the wherewithal to ensure all their young have access to the basics of food, water, health and education and a full life not cut short by war or poverty.
Indeed as illustrated in the book, the way we conduct politics itself is often dysfunctional and it might be too much to expect such a system to come up with the goods. I was keen therefore to shine a light on some of the alternative possibilities.
To some extent I’ve felt that I’m on a giant set of the Emperor’s New Clothes, where we can all see the problems, but there’s a silent conspiracy to agree not to discuss fixing the real issue but instead focus on putting plasters over the effects. Hence this book represents an attempt to point out the Emperor’s lack of clothing! I should also add that I’m not affiliated with any political party or think tank.
I believe a number of the ideas in the book might eventually come into being as systems inexorably gravitate towards their most stable point of equilibrium. The process could however take a few hundred years, but with publicity exposing the ideas and spawning debate it could lead to a renaissance in our thinking.
I've found that its not sufficient to be original in the content of the book and that without a big name its hard for a book by an unknown author to get noticed.
Hence wanted to produce 14 short videos focused on different themes and one slightly longer one on the book as a whole that I could promote on You Tube.
I think it can be an exciting project and if it achieves its objective of promoting the book, then will help generate fresh thinking on some of the major issues of our time ranging from poverty, trade, religion, politics and climate change to the way we work.
I've attached a word document containing the original Press Release which give some more detailed information about the book.
As the book covers quite a few topics, I'm happy to consider pitches from people with an interest in a particular area to just do a video covering that aspect. Therefore I have not given an overall budget as I don't know if you're interested in a particular topic area or the entire set.

The idea is the videos are to be like teasers to attract people to buy and read the book. A number of the points raised in the book are quite controversial and perhaps even revolutionary, and in the book I build up the case layer by layer, but taken out of context they may appear a bit far fetched, but if one reads the book and follows the reasoning then things fall into place, hence keen for people to get hold of the book.
When quoting please quote for doing a single video, ie one at a time, and also for doing a set of 15 videos. Because it may make sense for me to get two or three video's initially and to make sure I'm happy with the quality level etc before I commit to making them all. If I decide to go with that as a route please indicate what the pricing would be.
As it's meant to be a very short promotional video I don't think it would be appropriate to have credits. I mean if its a long film then credits are fine, but normally one doesn't expect to see credits on a short promotional film. (I am keen to help others with publicity, but don't think this would work on a such a short film and thinking of trailers at the movies you don't normally see credits on them)
I have no experience of writing promotional video scripts, so please make it clear is this something you would do or I would need to do, or is it a joint effort with my providing the raw input but you using your film making / promotion expertise to put the final gloss on.
Finally please also include what you think would be the ideal duration time wise for each of the videos. Remember the one which is for the book overall would need to be bit longer.
